If by "Charge in and help" you mean "death from above", then that one. Humans have a tendency not to look up, and I can't imagine many things more disorienting in this setting than ending up with a Jenner on your windscreen. :D

It all depends on the scenario and the mech i am piloting at the time. If i can i will close and engage at a angle or flank him. Forcing the enemy to turn to engage me or risk giving me a good firing position. If i am tied up and/or far away i will throw some long range support when i am able to.

So you are in a match and you see an ally who is holding his mech together through sheer determination while being assaulted by a larger mech which is almost in perfect condition. Most of your ally’s weapons are still operational, but the condition of his mech will keep him from winning, and you are the only one nearby who can help him. Rushing in to help him will almost certainly see most of your mech torn to shreds, but not far enough to destroy it.

Edit:I left thing a little vague as to what kind of mechs are fighting here. Use your imagination as to what is going on other than what I have set in pixels.

I voted "stay back and snipe" because in my mind we have:
1) heavily damaged friendly (with operational weapons)
2) Pristine enemy mech
3) My pristine mech

If I step between them:
1) My ally cannot fire anymore
2) My ally is damaged and probably doesn't have the manuverability to flank anymore
3) I have started a straight up slugging match with another pristine mech 1v1

This means that I'm starting the worst kind of fight for myself (a fair one :D ) and I'm only saving a barely useful mech that won't be able to help me much in the current match.

If I instead run around to the enemy mech's back:
1) My ally can continue dumping till he dies.
2) I can tear into the juicy back of the enemy
3) The enemy must either turn to address my threat, (letting the ally get away) or more likely pop my ally then turn to deal with me. (which gives me that many more free shots at his back)

I'm signing my ally's death warrent, but I will likely cripple the enemy mech, which means our team is winning in the long run. (trading a crippled lighter mech for a pristine heavier mech)

If an allied mech is in an "almost destroyed" state I don't see much reason to soak up damage meant for him. I won't be saving his life, he respawns next match anyway, if I end up a mess too then thats two mechs that are below 100% combat capability and likely two easy kills for another enemy we haven't encountered yet. He can't repair in the field so saving him from being destroyed by using my mech as a shield only weakens me and leaves him in no state to contribute to the future conflict.

No I'd play it as a game, support my team mate by shooting at his attacker but if he's gonna die then I'll make his sacrifice worth it by punching so many holes in his attacker while he ignores me that by the time he turns his attention on me he's doomed. Of course idealy, our combined arms would quickly down his opponent before he killed my team mate.

Meh, should have added a 4th option that involves you flanking the enemy. Oh well.

This really depends on number of mech's 4 each team on the field and what type and condition those mech's are. There is no one answer for this question and there are several more options available to a pilot that thinks.

I'd flank.

Also, brings to mind a TT game I played once. Friend's mech was almost completely disabled and he was surrounded.

So he self-destructed. It was glorious.

Miraculously he rolled for pilot death and lived.

Umm this is a Free To Play game...

Obviously I stay back from the skirmish and let others die so I don't have to spend my precious C-BILLS on repair costs for my weapons and Mech.

Sheesh, what a silly question.

I wasn't sure if people knew it was a joke. ;)
I just thought it's worth mentioning, it's one of those problems with the model we'll have to deal with.
Hopefully the devs don't make the repair costs as steep where you go into the red to maintain the best chassis/configs, like WOT does successfully.

I answered charge in but I doubt I'll be piloting something with enough armor for that. Taking a few hits to give the my lancemate time to bail out should still be an option however, and maybe I could line up a headshot, save the meat and the metal.

Since my mech is likely to be a mid range harasser, circling around and dumping two large lasers and an LBX-10 into it's rear armor is going to be far more effective than getting in the way ;)

Take out the enemy's guns. You give your teammate a chance to survive, you whittle an opponent down to where you or someone else can kill them, and you might distract them so the original teammate might be able to kill them.
