For those of us who grew up playing this game with little figures and maps the drop ship was most coveted as it is a mobile fortress.
To spice up the game a light mech could use a special TAG missile or laser designator to an Overlords Longtom

Along the same line support units like anti Mech Personal squads, All level of tanks. My fav the demolisher. 80 ton twin AC-20

So it could be like this.

Both sides get defense points and offense points to spend on AI units. From either a defended position or a drop ship.
Choice of squad mates could give more points towards support AI.
