Don't forget that if you do get into an argument with someone, you should always make a Hitler analogy.

4) For the love of the English language, USE SPELL CHECK.

I would love to, but my PC is set on my language and it labels all the words as bad. :)

While I did poke some fun with this in my previous reply having a spell check is nice, grammar check better and punctuation a must! I know we live in an sms world but for the love of *** please use punctuation :)

Nothing drives a point home better than comparing somebody to the SS.

If you're using Firefox, you can have multiple dictionaries installed on that browser and switch between which is active at any given time...heck, a check in the 'Available Add-ons' right now is showing a raft of english-{otherlanguage} translators that you can get. Maybe that'd help?

Wired magazine is hardly an adjudicator of what is and isn't proper grammar. There is only one Internet, which is why it's a proper noun.

Actually, I used Wired magazine as an example since the subject matter of the magazine was so relevant to the point at hand.

Had we been discussing weddings (or Weddings?), I would have pulled Bride and Groom magazine out and used that as an example, assuming I had one.

This board is not North American. It is made up of so many different cultures, each with certain grammatical styles.
The internet is no more a proper noun than the telephone or television. That happens to be my reasoning on the matter, and indeed the reasoning of many, many people.
this explains things rather nicely:

http://wordsbynowak....capitalization/

Consequently, while I agree with everything that was said in the OP (especially about spelling and grammar...and if spelling is an issue, use Firefox and download the spell check. *** knows it helps me...) I don't really like to be told what is and isn't acceptable as far as such contentious issues like this.

I don't care if you put a capital 'I' when spelling internet.

I just don't want to be told the way I do it is wrong when is plainly is not.

I'm not actually sure if there really is such a thing as Bride and Groom magazine

Hitting Alt + 39 after every second word? No way! :D
And I don't have Firefox, so I can't.

Oh, well; just a suggestion. :D

In my experience , if someone takes the effort to warn/announce/apologize that English isn't their first language, they typically take more care and attention to syntax and grammar than many 'native English speakers'¹ , so a) thanks for that, and 2) I apologize on behalf of the lazy typists...from every background, really. They're not lesser people simply because they don't worry as much about clear, concise communication as we do...they just may have more difficulty in getting their points across and being understood. :)

Footnotes, because YES, I'm that ana7²:
1. I think it's also possible that the prefatory comment psychologically predisposes me to being more lenient towards someone's grammar.
2. Heck, I created a fake 'authority' "das Büro für Grammatikdurchführung"...mostly as a self-lampooning joke about my own compulsive behaviour, which stems from my efforts to counteract my dyslexia. :^)
3. This is the rare Endangered Self-Referential Footnote.³ (name that game! ;^) )

Ok, I didn't read the whole thread, but...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who stops reading any person's post which begins with the above introduction.

Excellent guidelines for a safer, happier, saner forum. If only the real internet actually worked this way!

P.S. I really did read the whole thread.

This link should be of help for those who want to make good arguments (and argument just means arguing for a position - not conflict or warfare)

You know, I had all the high school English classes, I had several in College including General comp. However that was all over 20 years ago. My spelling is not all that (thanks spell check!) My grammar is good enough. I don't cringe at chat speak, your spelling doesn't bother me nor does your grammar, if I don't understand I'll ask. Say what you wanna say how you wanna say it. I will not nit-pick any "abuses" of the English language because I rightly don't give a flying ****! It's about what a person has to say, not how perfectly he says it! I personally like hearing your life experience over empirical data due to being trained in statical data collection (SPC). I learned in my classes that Empirical data is often manipulated. It's why two studies of the same topic can often yield polar opposite results!

Nope, tell me what you think/believe, I will share what I think/believe and we will still learn something new... If we are willing to listen. So if you are a grammar Lawyer understand this... I don't care! I won't care! I'm here to have fun and not get grammar lessons. Now let's talk about lazars! pew! pew!! pew!!! :D :) :D

For the record, Tsen... great post!!! :D

Any chance we could get a stickied link/copy of this in the suggestions forum? That's where the problem seems to be the worst. :/

Excellent post, and thank you very much. I am absolutely new to posting in forums and appreciate this.

(serious question) Is it inappropriate to swear, not at somebody but for emphasis? (of course using 'sh**', for example) I am a truck driver and tend toward this. The company you keep, and all that. But I am interested to know. I used it in a post and felt kind of ashamed, it wasn't really necessary. It was intended to add a humorous flavor.

In RP stories it's appropriate if it's appropriate for the story. Generally in regular posts no and the filter on here will grab almost anything :). Even if ya were to say ****! thats a good point as an emphasis word. :D
