Go figure, someone is trying to use table top rules to apply to a First Person Shooter game. Imagine if someone took HALO and turned it into a turn based strategy game and then people came in from playing the FPS version and complained about how the Needler wouldn't work that way in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAME.

In this case, the OP used Battletech in their title, so using Battletech to argue against them is fair don't you think?

In addition it is NOT easy to hit even at close range, with SRMs, Lasers, and ACs all on the same trigger if the target is moving perpendicular to you and even 200m away. You have to lead different amounts for the different weapons and Lasers you don't lead at all.

I don't think it's too bad, actually. Because of heat considerations and to maximize screenshake in my experience you won't be firing them all at once, and it's pretty straightforward to adjust the amount to which you're leading to match your target's speed. I do agree that boating specifically benefits long-range specialists (because as you said you can lead targets better and because it's less costly to dissipate heat). Of course there are definitely viable short-range builds (splatcat, KC20, ect.) that specialize in one weapon, but IMO there's no indication they in general perform substantially better than similarly strong balanced short-range builds.

So stop complaing about it.

HBK-4P

AWE-X -> Nearly the whole series.

CAT-X -> Nearly the whole series.

It is normal to boat things.

In tabletop, the HBK-4P is deadly... in close quarters and where there is lots of cover and pavement or other stuff that hampers slow mechs.

It fails miserably in open maps.

That is more or less mirrored here.

Boating is fine; it just shouldn't be the only build that works.

And, really, right now, boating is no the only thing that works, though certain builds are generally "more effective" than others.

All those complaining PPC boats with pinpoint Alphastrike...

Masakari.

Hits with the force of 6 IS PPC, and deals pinpoint alpha damage. And could be introduced into MWO soon enough. Difference being, it most likely brings 9 IS PPC worth of damage in MWO.
