I am looking at a fast jenner with 4 MPL. But what engine? i am worried about the increased danger from any torso being taken out for an XL. is it risky in a fast light mech? or should i stick with standards?

300XL, the only engine i ever used in a Jenner and it's totally worth it.

Edit:
Speed is what keeps you allive in a light mech, get as much speed as possible. To be able to equip anything else you will need to use XL engines for that.
That is, unless you are using some sort of specialised voodoo setup :D

What elder thorn said.

Take the biggest engine possible, or what gets you as close to 140 (or was it 150?) kp/h.

Some mechs do not have easily targeted side torsos, the Jenner included. XL Jenners are a must.

Agreed with everyone else. I haven't tried a 300XL in a jenner, but I do have a nice Jenner-F build with 6 ML, DHS, Endo, and a 245XL. Works well unless a raven shows up, but all jenners have that issue.

XL 300 only on Jenners. Although you'll quickly find that no matter what your build is or how good you are that a Raven-3L will beat you 1v1 90% of the time.

Yes, the key at the moment is to never fight a Raven 1v1 (or worse). Embrace your role as a giant killer, and once the big guys are dead your buddies will be happy to protect you from that 3L.

Also, to the OP - yes, XL 300 on a Jenner, always. Your speed will keep you alive far longer than the extra durability when you're slow.

Another hint for light mech piloting......never run in a straight line out of cover. It is easier to train weapons on a target with a predictable vector. When moving make your path as unpredictable as possible.....spoken "juke till you puke".

If you need more firepower, try to use XL280 (comes with Phract-3D).

I've noticed, that 4xML+2xSRM4 works very well against medihms, heavies and assaults. 40 dmg Alphastrike mounted on 142kph platform!

But I'm useless agains Cravens, because of 200ms ping. With 100ms or less ping you can easily put 8xSRM on Craven - it works much much better then 4xSSRM).

I'll second what others have said - XL300 is THE engine for a Jenner. As a general rule for light mechs, the biggest XL engine you can fit into it is the one you want. There are only two kinds of light mechs on the battlefield - the quick and the dead.

Well, most commandos take the 195XL instead of the possible 210 because of weight and because you will be running 140 kp/h anyway... :)

I would say that you should be looking to go 130 at a minimum (with speed tweak). The max engine is a good place to start (and the one I would buy while you are short on cash), but it's worth it to try slightly smaller engines that let you take more weapons. The Jenner has more weapon hardpoints than any other light mech. That is your biggest advantage imo.

PS my ping is 300+

Its 18 vs 20 damage and imho MPL are better for doing damage against fast Mechs.

Why is your ping so high? good lord. We need EU and Oceanic servers to help you guys.

yep am in australia. from what i have read all the other aussies are in the same boat. I wonder what my damage would be like if i had a ping of 50 to 100. really hard chasing other light mechs with that kind of ping. i will keep the MPLs and keep tryng for the shotgun effect...maybe i should grab some streaks...

god how good would it be to have an aussie server...dare to dream. =)

I disagree. It's all in the maneuvering. If you just do a Circel Dance o' Death, then sure, you'll lose, but JJs mean you can out-turn any 3L, getting him in your sights and staying out of his. And proper use of terrain can make it difficult for him to achieve/keep a lock for Streaks.

The main reason XL is considered a must for lights and shunned on most larger mechs is simply because if you lose a torso in a light, you were probably dead, anyway. Speed is the light mech's armor and shorting yourself on guns for a Std engine just means you are a very slightly harder to kill pest that they can ignore until the fight is over.

About speed: I've started using XL255 (from dakka-Phract) on Jenner with ERPPC. Don't have JJs but 130 KPH is enough - I can still outrun mediums, avoid LRMs.

Absolutely! I find it curoius how many times I'll be in a combat against a Jenner and he either decides to go into a circle of death with me, but not use JJ. If all Jenner pilots used their JJ effectively and mounted srms rather than streaks there may be a lot less QQ about the Raven 3L being OP.
