with all the uproar about pay for use items introduced, it got me thinking.
how do you get people to continue paying for the game, and at the same time allow f2p and small investment players to play?

I.E. players can be divided into 3 classes:
1. those that don't/won't pay and are important to the game because they make up a large player base for the others to play with.
2. players who only put in a small 1-time investment and maybe can be persuaded to put in a little big of extra cash for 1-time purchases
3. players who will continually purchase premium time if they have something to buy with it.

to make the most out of group (3), some kind of CB sink should be introduced into the system such that they will constantly have something that their money can buy.

to make the most out of group (2), although they need to play on a level playing field as the others, they should be made to feel that paying for premium time will elevate their playing experience.

group (1) should be persuaded into putting some minimal investment and convert into group (2). they are in a good spot right now so their playing experience needs to remain as-is.

all these goals can be met by using mech upkeep.

mech upkeep is the idea that every match, you pay for every mech you have in your bay (excluding hero/founder mechs). This serves as a soft limiter to the number of mechs you can maintain without having a premium account, and as a CB sink that helps contain players from unlocking everything in the game (because new content or no money is an inferior busyness model to money monthly).

if the upkeep is tuned at allowing players to maintain 8-10 non hero mechs this does not change by much the experience of f2p players. mechbay-only buyers will feel themselves restricted to this numebr and some of them will be pursuaded into joining premium time players.

premium time players will get more CB per match, allowing them to maintain 12-20 mechs, or they will simply be exempted from upkeep. Having to sell their mechs if they discontinue premium time will help keep them paying (puppy dog effect).
