the description says ferrous gives 12% more protection per ton but takes up slots.
this would mean 10 tons of standard would give a paltry 320 pnts of armor while ferrous would give a ... whopping 358.4 points of armor. am i wrong? what am i missing... are these guys just noob know it all's confusing endosteel with ferrous? or am i the noob? wazzaaaap

The "more protection" actually means more per ton, not more armor. Ferro is just a weight saving upgrade that is not as good as endo.
Always get endo before getting ferro. Only get ferro if you can make use of it with endo (which is pretty much only light mechs and a select few other builds.)

Used mostly in light and medium builds, and the off chance that a specific heavy might want it to accomplish a unique build. Assault, probably, never take this, using endo exclusively.
Endo works the same way, but with more of a decrease in tonnage for the same number of armor points.

game wise it would be much more compelling and allow for more variation if it increased your max armor.

Not totaly true though, but you should really know what you are doing, if you buy it, so don't buy it!

4% over standard would be hard to swallow on 99% of mech at 14 crit slots for it. particularly when you have endo and XL engines for weight savings.

kinda weird to make it virtually pointless/useless

Both of which save you more weight than Ferro does.
However, on some light/medium designs I've found that combining Ferro with Endo gives me some decent builds that I couldn't get otherwise.

Well, right now we can only have the IS early version of FF. Clan's FF however is nice, since both their endo and FF only take 7 slots each. Makes it much more useable.

I have heavies (two I think) rocking FF, both work well enough. But they are also outliers.
