As most of the Threads here in the forum tend to be about whining and rageing against
the current MWO-State, i just want to give some postive feedback.

There ARE moments where the Matchmaker truely hits the point.

Yesterday evening there was such a moment for me.

As pugging i dropped solo on Assault FrozenCity.
Our Team was mixed up with all kinds of mechs and there was a short console conversation about tactics.

Our only ECM-Mech, a DDC Atlas decided to go solo via tunnel, the rest walked to the ship-wreckage.
Some hunchie stuck his nose on the upper left of the wreckage and was hit instantly by an srm salvo
from a Splattcat. Somehow he managed to survive this and warned the rest of the team via console Text.
So we flanked them right and then a large brawl started and last for at least 5 mins...
At the end there was one hunchie and one badly damaged Atlas on our side and only one lightly scratched atlas on the other side left.
The Hunchie tried his best to grind off the armor of the atlas, but was hit by an ac20 and blow off.
The atlas boys circled and fired each other, our atlas did very well and was shortly to core the other
but was hit by a massive last alpha strike.

That was an awesome match !!!

These are the moments i absolutly love and its some motivation to play this game,
but its very rare in PUG life.

ELO works. I've been stomping skulls in my Heavy bracket for many matches. Then I get dropped into a string of games with players of considerably higher skill than what I'm used to and all of a sudden I can't run around like a ferret on ice and expect to dominate. It got a lot more fun. Just gotta do it with the other weight classes now...

Those matches where i survive in a Death's Knell while fighting off Ravens is what i consider a rare positive experience. :)

There are some positive experiences in this game. The last ones I remember were:

My Atlas was torn into pieces and left as weaponless Zombie on forest colony facing many enemy mechs running around. They realized that I am no longer a danger and let me stumble away. I walk straight towards a Catapult on a hill raining lrm on my teammates. It was like feeling the fear (maybe only in my fantasy lol) of the pilot that my Atlas was coming nearer and nearer. It took some time for him to kill me with his med lasers but I bought that time for my team. One of my teammates saw my actions through my eyes via the spectator mode and wrote something about an honorable death fighting to the last bit of armor for the team. That was pure motivation!

Another one was getting on open water on the "forest colony" map again and fighting three targets at once to stop them from approaching our base. My armor was gone, one torso blown away but before the three could finish me my team managed to cap their base. One moment later and my mech would have been only a pile of glowing metal.

I find the implementation of Elo in this game to be horribly flawed. Most of the time, your high Elo rating means you get dumped onto a team full of newbs and matched up against 2 premades.

Every now and again, Elo works out though.

The first day Elo got implemented, I was in a 2 man pre-made and got teamed up with, I think, 4 Goons and 2 Templars, against a team of Snow Raven, KaoS, and SJR players. Wasn't very close, if I remember correctly, but the fact that it matched me up with players I recognized, who were all higher level teams, was nice.

Other times, I have been in a 4 man premade that was teamed up with another 4 man premade against 2 premades on the other side. Those games are always the best, even when they aren't close.

I don't think I've ever had a good experience when dropping solo though. I've won and I've lost, but I've almost always either been on a good team matched up against newbs, or vice versa. That doesn't do it for me.

So, okay, here's one:
Posted Image

This was the closest match of my entire life. By the end of the match there was only me and a critically damaged Cataphract left standing against a single Raven-3L. The Raven retreated after taking combined fire from the two of us, so we headed to his base to cap. Both of us were quite heavily damaged, making me quite anxious, especially as the Raven was sporting ECM and could thus get the drop on us (though he seemed to be out of ammo as well).

As I sat there waiting, my Cataphract teammate got shot down by the Raven. In a panic, I start circling around the oil rig, desperately taking pot shots at him as he turned to fire. Eventually, we both stopped to exchange fire at each other, with me constantly turning my red center torso away from him in an effort to gain the upper hand. After an excruciatingly long exchange, I finally cored him, with my entire chassis so far into the red that a machinegun could probably have killed me.

It was glorious.

I have been positivly surprised by elo.

Stats since open Beta, 206 Games played with 105W/101L. All of them only pugging.
Since the introduction of ind. Mechstats (they came with Elo i believe, if not correct me)
44 Games played, 30W/14L. With only a few landslides.

So it seems to work well for me, but there is room for further improvement I guess.

No idea why its called "rare". when i pug i get a really good game's usually once every ~ third/fourth game.
Anyway, what changed experiance for me are those stats.
Right now im playing my cataphract close range brawler and im sitting on 20:1 kill/death ratio, every game is 10 times more interesting/challenging (and stressing) becouse i dont want to mess up my stats (and no, i dont dc:]).

Happy to share a bit of the love.

I think ELO has been working very on the whole. I've been in some matches that have been real on the edge of the seat stuff and gone right the way to the last couple of mechs per side on an Assault or the last 25 resource points on a Conquest. Of course there have been "OMGBBQ" moments, but I'm not sure if they were down to ELO being broken or the component of the mech located between keyboard and chair being temporarily faulty.

The State Rewind implementation has had a dramatic effect on my laser accuracy (currently at 85% for Large, Medium and Medium Pulse across all chassis')

All in all, I'm a very happy MechWarrior. I stopped playing in November time because I found the game to be a little frustrating. I picked it up again a couple of weeks ago and was frankly astounded at how far it'd come. As a result, I've definitely improved my battlefield awareness and piloting skills because the game feels as if it's allowing me to learn by mistakes instead of ruthlessly punishing me for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Sure, there is still a long way to go, and some of the decisions PGI have made have been questionable, which do give me some concern about the direction it's heading. That said, it's still the most fun I can have with my clothes on and still the only PVP game that I play and enjoy.

Ferrets on ice are less agile than you'd think :)

But yes, I concur, matchmaking has been good and challenging.

...and OP, the match probably would have been better if your brilliant DDC didn't try to tunnel rush solo. :/

Just because you're getting your *** handed to you doesn't mean that it's by teams stacked with two premades. Maybe you're just getting your *** handed to you because you have an artificially inflated Elo based on pre-Elo team play. If "most of the time" you're finding yourself horribly mismatched, given that this isn't everyone else's experience, it makes sense to look beyond the matchmaker.

I've had a few but here's a gem:

Posted Image

Its forest colony. I'm in my Stalker, close.mid range high alpha build (This was before SSRM's shot random locations). Myself and MrDingDong went through the tunnel to dodge the immense number of LRM's being fired. By the time we re-emerged we were 2v7 (one DC). Being a pug game I had my doubts but MrDingDong had a cool head and a tactical mind. He calls that we should take cover behind the hill and alpha strike each opponent as they came through the pass. Sure enough the enemy was greedy and took the bait. One alpha strike after another, each mech turned into a smoldering ruin. A lone hunchback makes it over the hill and begins to unleash everything he has. One shot later, he joins the wreckage, but not before my mech overheats. Unwilling to over-ride, I allow my mech to cool while MrDingDong takes the brunt of the next wave. Unfortunately for me I reboot facing square on with another Stalker. Before I can pull my eject lever he blows my engine clean out. His killing blow was also his last, and MrDingDong finished him off with no remorse. With one target left, a cowering Catapult is torn to shreds by MrDingDong's superior firepower and we win the day.

I will never forget what I learned that day. Against overwhelming odds, a keen tactical mind will win a hundred battles over a mindless mob. Greed is not kind.

That's what a warboss does.

The comment in chat said in reference to their 5M, who didn't understand it was a bad idea to lead his guys in one by one to try and kill my wounded atlas, especially while my guys were shooting them in the back.

Gotta say, wounded 'mechs are the best bait. They make for the best stories too.

rare?
Theres an awful lot of awesome built into these mechs.. You just gotta realize what each chasis is capable of .
The key being build strength and mastering movement of each chasis. <this involves mastering and fine tuning your m/kb/JS setup.

Given I did not like ELO when first implemented. However, I've had much closer matches recently. Very rarely when I'm doing a little pugging am I in a match that one team roflstomps another. Most matches I've seen recently comes down to 2v2ish and are really close. No real 'stories' but just lots of fun.

I also don't agree with saying these experiences are rare though. For me a roflstomp is rarer than having a fun and close match.

I'd say at the current rate; I have about 1 EPIC game per 5 - 6 matches. The others are still decent and maybe 2 steamrolls in an entire game session.

For example many games we will be down at the end by say 4 mechs, but end up taking out 2 due to skill and the fact that they were red/cored and then it's a 1v1 often times between two beat up guys; works very nicely when it does and ive noticed this pretty regularly.
