Who else builds "trooper mechs" that can handle a variety of situations. I know most meta good builds involve lots of one system but ive had good luck (2/1 kdr in pubs) with some all arounder type builds. In general

Trebuchet with 3 jets, full armor, LRM15, and 4 med lasers, and tag.

Flame dragon with two ER PPC and a streak rack

things that go 80 kph minimum and can hit at all ranges is the way i define this class of build. Anyone else have builds they like that they feel confident using on any map anytime?

Jenner iwth ER large and 2 ML's has been fun on alpine too

I build all of my mechs in this way actually. I also have about the same degree of success as you do. I get at least one kill every game and usually at least 4 assists.
I think the current meta is shoddy because its built around Beta Testing,
Splat cats and snipers might always be useful, but know that their useless without other mechs doing the rest of the leg work.

I have a 4SP thay falls into this category. As I've been working on it, I've been trying to keep in mind the heavier clan lights. By this I mean mechs that have have a surplus of speed and firepower at the expense of durability. My build is 81kph with 2xERLL, 2xML, 2xSrm6. It functions well as support, both at close and long range, with speed to manuver and choose when/where to engage. Not a main line unit, but great as mobile support, which is kinda where mediums seem to be at their best (at least in my experience).

Who else?

I'm pretty good in my C1 cat. 2x LRM 15, 2x ERPPC, 1x Flamer, 1x TAG. Why the flamer? Good for obscuring vision, allows me more time to aim my PPCs.

Only downside is it takes a lot of skill to use one properly in a brawl, due to lots of diff weapon groups. i can manage 5 groups in a fight pretty much perfectly (never shooting at target at min/max ranges, landing most shots, etc.) but no more than that

X5 cicada with X2 LRM5 and 4ML going 113,5 km/h and beagle probe. missile effectiveness dependant on team targeting and can get spotty at times and enough speed to be faster than MOST mediums and heavies unless they are specced for speed

IMO the trick is to pick weapons that are good at the range you actually want to fight at, but are also good at other ranges. UAC/5s are a good example, or Gauss, or LLas. I'm not a huge fan of builds that don't have at least one situation where they can bring all their firepower to bear.

This is the current build I am saving for minus the jets and + Artemis instead. Using the trial treb with the same setup minus Artemis and TAG has been my most successful mech so far, over and above my purchased and customised Raven.

I'm a short to mid range player. My aim is terrible, I know it. My piloting is fairly good. I might have a token ranged weapon like an ER Large Laser or a smaller LRM (5 or 10), beyond that I go mostly short range. Sniping is beyond me...If I snipe someone, I was probably aiming at a different mech LOL. So mine is more to fit my playstyle rather than any desire for min/maxing. I was the same way in tabletop, granted I mostly played lights and mediums in the tabletop. MWO, it's more mediums and heavies.
