I'm partial to the dual UAC5, AC2 build with as much ammo as I can cram in and an XL255. It's pretty effective if you stay behind cover and swing your big gorilla arms around corners for a quick burst or two. Then when they're a little softened up, I'll expose my full torso and finish them off with both sets of cannons. I find I improve my survival rate with that strategy. I love blowing legs off the lights too..

i use standard 240 engine with armour maxed out and 4 ac5. it's slower then my atlas but i am good with it, i am confidant i can win any brawling match 1v1. the problem is getting close. but i can also shoot pretty pinpoint from a good range if i have too

Interesting point about gauss is that its very quiet. If a 4x or JM6 fitted with ac cannons is firing at you you tend to hear and feel in the incoming round and get out of the way , whereas gauss is far less audibly noticable. If you take a sniping role with one of your team brawling the target whilst he is taking his attention you can be gauss'ing him away and he won't be aware of it.

This is the setup I use. I never seem to run out of ammo before a match ends and heat is never an issue.

This is my Cataphract 4x, I frequently top the scoreboard with this build.
Endo-steel
1 Double Heatsink
XL 235 54.3kph (around 59 with speed tweak)
4 ac/5s (2 on each arm) (chain fire for immediate correction of fire) (2 on firegroup 1, 2 on firegroup 2)
take 10 armor off each leg (curiously enough no one ever really focuses my legs)
10 tons of ammunition, giving you about 75 rounds per cannon (300 total)
You also need to unlock your arms if you have them locked, and be good at aiming
You will never overheat
I have rarely ran out of ammo using this build (don't focus fast movers unless you have to, or they are still)
If you use this build try not to be out front exposed, this build attracts a lot of attention as it Is because it is very threatening once you bring those ac/5s to bear, being at the front of an assault is not the place you want to be. Try to stay at medium ranges between 200 - 700 meters, unless you are going 1v1 a mech then get closer, (though I can frequently destroy 2 lights on my own that have turned their attention to me). This build is great for providing cover fire for your assaults, anyone that peaks their head out to get a shot off is going to get 1 or 2 salvos making It very costly to peak out. Always stay with the team, you will work wonders if you do, (and if you don't have a derp team). Even when you are with the team, the mechs you focus will most likely begin to turn their attention to you because you do an alarming amount of damage in a very short time from a safer distance than brawlers, try to focus with the team as much as possible, I have frequently made an atlas retreat from a teamfight because of the damage I do. This build shreds medium mechs like paper, don't be afraid to go 1v1 a medium mech, you will do too much damage to him before he can utilize his speed, unless you suck at aiming, then pick another mech to play, you need superb aim and the ability to lead targets down range for you to make people **** their pants. There will be games where you get cored quickly, but if you follow what I told you and play smart, those games will be few. And even when you do lose the match, If you survived till the end, you probably put some major hurt on the opfor.

I know the pain the original poster is describing. The Cataphract can be an unwieldy chassis sometimes. I've got mine set up with four AC/5's and still grinding towards the XL engine I need to turn faster, but I'm probably regretting my investment so far--accuracy is key and I'm not anywhere near accurate enough (as a new player and without a good XL engine in it) so players like me are going to suffer for a while before it gets better.
I have no idea what my problem is, but I cannot seem to aim successfully enough to land solid damage. On the rare occasions I actually get to follow with the team, and don't have my low-hanging arms obscured by hillsides, I'm often unable to put out more than 100 damage. I am not certain if I have ever broken 200 on this setup. Given how terrifying people describe it as, it's clear I'm woefully mishandling it.
I may swap them out for a pair of LBX10's, but with this slow chassis I feel like that's just a band-aid and not a real solution. I'm nearly able to buy a XL250ish engine, which might make my problems go away.
Oddly, I'm way more comfortable fighting lights up close because I can fairly reliably hit them with my quad cannons, even on the move, but at more than 200 meters I have the hardest trouble knowing if I'm hitting things (even stationary targets) because the zoom levels are so low and my aiming reticule so wobbly. That module for the super zoom is just so essential that it's not funny.
