I'd LIKE to be able to buy some minis, paint the ******** up and play a proper game of it, but here in Brisbane (Or Redcliffe, or surrounding areas, it doesn't matter to me how far I really have to drive) I can't find anywhere that sells the bloody things. Best I ever found was a shop that dabbled in BT with some of the TRO 3060 readouts and some novels.
Anyone in QLD can shed some light on this?

otherwise known as military simulations, they are in Melbourne, but I have found them to be pretty good for the last.....how long....25 years or so. Great range and very reliable.

It is 2012 in Australia too, quiaff?
I never even bothered to look around in sweden.
Why would I? Minis can be bought from e-bay, Ironwind Metals, or Ral Partha.
Rules ara available to buy from Classicbattletech.com

find local players and arrange a night in the local scout group, church hall or other socal building. This is how i got into RP and warhammer Back in the day, and while we have moved venue once were still here every friday night 12+ years later. Ofc you then have to pay for the hall and pool some money for boards or terrain, but if you get lucky and are willing to commit to long term and be flexable with the scout group you can get the hut quite cheap, as its only deadtime and any money helps for them just meens if they need it one night you gotta cancel.
Ps. some pubs and coffee shops may let you have the backroom for a night for free as long as you are drinking enough between you (these can be a little less reliable though if the suddenly need that night and often wont store boards and such)
All of this is from a UK perspective so you may need to modify for AUS.

They generally have a good selection and good prices. Of course, they're based in the U.S. so the shipping costs might be too much.
And I feel your pain. My best friend is the only guy in my entire area who still plays. I live next to a great gamestore, there are tons of different games played there, but no BT players.

If there isn't interest and a group around, you create it. While not everyone may know specifically of the game, I'm sure there are lots of peeps that have similar interests (gaming, stompy robots, etc...).
Get it going, become Legend my friend.
After all, if your grandparents & great grandparents hadn't thought the same you'd be British right now.

The only place that shows in a Google Search that is within an hour of me (and I'm less than an hour from all of Toronto, so that's ridiculous that there are NO stores in Toronto that carry the miniatures) is some small little shop that is closed on sun-mon, and only open from 5 to 8 on weeknights. This does not make me feel like it's a promising place to make the trip to...
Also their website is down... ungh

The Milsims range is fairly minimal, they do have the 25 Anniversary Box set most of the books and some of the lance packs but if you after specific mechs then your out of luck.
The Anniversary box set isn't a bad starting point, comes with about 24 fairly average plastic minis and 2 really nice ones. If you grab that, Total Warfare and a map pack you have a good starting point.
In regards to getting stuff over the net, postage to Australia is a killer from most Ebay and Internet dealers, with battletech I generally find that I need to order about $150-$200 to make it worthwhile. What I tend to do is put together a group order with friends and see if we can get something around the $400-$500 mark.
It's one of the joys of living in Australia, everything has a 50% mark up above US prices, it's frequently released later and released in smaller quantities.
So yes I do feel your pain, I get bitten by it on a regular basis

They have a BT campaign going in Coeur D'Alene at Strategy and Games at the Silverlake Mall, they also stock minis, books etc. Karl and Trevis will also order in anything you want. I will be back in North Idaho in two months and will also be starting another BT campaign playing once a week at Strategy and Games as well. I will be starting my campaign in the 3045-3048 era. Which is my favorite era in the game. Cause you start with 3025 tech, work up thru salvage thru the variants and eventually start getting lostech and finally end up facing off with the clan. A great time.

If you want to go longer-term, pick your fav' local store and talk to the owner/manager. I've never met a game store owner that wasn't willing to put in a special order for me, especially if I was willing to put down a deposit or pay-up-front. Start coming in, placing these orders on a regular basis and they'll become more willing to preemptively purchase things (because they know they'll have a customer for it). Additionally, if they've got any public/reservable table space for gaming, ask if you can start running (semi-)regular pick-up games. Get a regular crew of folks coming in playing and looking for more materials and they WILL start stocking it.

Yeah, you can do this on the internet yourself just as easy and probably for less money. But the FLGS is where you will meet folks to play the game with. No sales at FLGS means there will be no FLGSs in the future.
