Got to say, with HSR drive by cockpitting with my Flame vs. Catapults has never been easier. Also, I've taken a good number of mechs down in the last while with my dual-gauss/4ML K2 via headshots. Sometimes intentionally, often just because I aim high center-mass, so accidental headshots happen all the time.

Yeah, if you shut down; it's game over. Gotta be smart. Always move.

I have had people rage at me; shooo its not my fault you got in my sights, and got your dome blown.

Min 1 shot head shot damage seems to be around 40. Catapults, Hunchbacks and Centurions seem especially vulnerable. This is achievable by Dual AC20s, 7 Med Pulses, 4 PPCs,4 ER PPCS. Warning, Grouping is important. The Swayback, K2, Awesome 3025 seem to be the likely most candidates to do head shots as torso hardpoints yiels better convergence at short ranges.

I think I have only ever been head shot 2 times since open Beta started. I've head shot lots of people but not been that many times myself. I know quite a few people who actively go for head shots - I'm one of them. I spent some time learning where to shoot. The head on a Catapult and Stalker are fairly large.

Are you sure you are getting headshot? Did it say Cockpit destroyed at the end or did it say Engine destroyed. I think it is still harder today to get a head shot than it was in closed beta.

Since the patch I feel like I'm getting killed by snipers a lot more frequently with shots to the head. This isn't me complaining about snipers per se (although they're annoying) but more me wondering if this is due to the patch or people using hacks. Just to see what was out there I went looking for aimbots, and yeah, they're easy to find.

So I guess my real question is this: Is there aimbot detection in this game? Are other people noticing an increase in deaths due to headshots?

It's not possible to hack in this game unless you are using lasers. Allow me to demonstrate... Lasers are hitscan, they hit wherever they are aimed. With the new state-rewind you can now hack with laser aimbots (the hack makes you aim directly at the head).

For *ANY* other weapon, hacking is difficult or impossible. I'm in a jenner running perpendicular to the shooter, at a fixed speed, in a straight line. he *MIGHT* be able to hit me with a hacked PPC that had target movement prediction. This would be an insanely hard to make hack, and if I were moving in any other manner it would not work. How can a hack know if I am going to juke left or right? how can a hack anticipate a sudden change in speed? It cannot.

Everyone who complains about PPC jump sniper "hacks" had better be standing dead still, or moving in a straight line perpendicular to the shooter. Otherwise it is IMPOSSIBLE for it to have been hacks, because the hack cannot predict the targets future actions.

Just to ask, what mech you are using? Some have better chance of being hit in the head than others.

just yesterday my muromets was legged by an atlas, so i stood still as he stood still directly in front of me approx 50m. i was shooting ac10(only weapon remaining) directly into the eye with the supposed cockpit, i must have expended 10-12 shots and i never ended up killing him.

Since training grounds and HSR, it's actually pretty damn easy to headshot most mechs with 5xLL in my Stalker. A lot of the hitboxes are wacky, and knowing where the cockpit really is, instead of what looks like the "head" makes a huge difference. After about 3 drops in the training grounds it's about a 40% chance on most mechs to take out the cockpit.

As for the hax, I'd start being suspicious if you get taken out at 1,000+ meters from projectile weapons (gauss, PPC) - I've seen that happen to multiple lancemates in a single drop, same killer. Situations like that seem to imply hax more strongly, but in general if it's < 300 meters it's easily legit.

I've noticed that projectile weapons have a hard time hitting some mech's cockpits, especially the assaults. I'm wondering if maybe the hitbox size of the projectile itself is large enough that it hits the CT bounding box first...

Which eye you are shooting at is very important.

My snail-slow Atlas got trapped in a furball as the enemy mechs boiled out of the caldera in caustic and as the largest and closest target I started taking heavy fire. Since I was already poo'd I went ahead and charged (well, lumbered towards) an enemy Atlas in order to make my death expensive.

This guy was facing me full forward and stationary, making it easy to place my cross-hair over his left "eye" and alpha my AC/20, 2xLL and SRM's and down he went moments before a K2's twin 20's cored me from behind.

This is the only head shot I can actually attribute to aiming and was only possible because I was able to easily target the one location I know will give me that head shot. Had he even been moving his torso side to side in short and unpredictable arc's I wouldn't have been able to put enough damage on target to drop him.

I don't even start thinking about hacks until I see multiple long range head shots. Watching my brother play I witnessed a mech in River City take head shots while still on his base (southern platform) from two dual gauss mech's. Before he even moved he was down. The rest of the match went similarly as any mech visible went down to head shots. He reported this but I've no idea if the shooters were investigated.

Up close, if a mech isn't moving and you know where to shoot, head shots are relatively easy if you have a steady hand and a little bit of luck.

Could be more people are using the training grounds to find where the cockpit is on mechs. I know I was surprised on the location of some of them.

This^^^^^

Training grounds has been very useful for increasing my cockpit hit rate.

Not at all. Most of my deaths are still from torso destruction. Headshots are very easy to get for any target that stands still for a few seconds, especially to those with lower latency. Also the mouse is more steady (?) if you edit your user.cfg file (which they don't encourage) to remove the mouse acceleration (which screws up precision movements a lot).

You can train yourself to do quick headshots in the Testing Grounds. All you need is pinpoint damage of 33 points or higher.
