Hello all. Some people prefer mechs which stack one or a few specific weapons to overwhelm enemies, (Such as boats or the 4UAC5 JM6.) but I prefer to be able to react effectively in any situation. Polarizing your weapons all to one role or range may improve your deadliness at certain times, but it mostly just makes you vulnerable in any other situation.
Especially for something as slow and easy to strike as a Jagermech, being unable to react to targets at a certain range (long or short) will leave you ineffective in many situations, resulting in your undignified death.
Here's the build I've been playing most often, for its ability to be deadly at any range. Ammo has been placed in the legs and arms. I am aware of how unconventional this is, however, the Jagermech takes damage to the side torsos, center and face dramatically more than the legs or arms. Taking fatal face damage is a very real, very common issue with Jagers, and having ammo in there or the side torsos (with an XL) is a death sentence. Because your arm profiles are so small, it is much rarer to take damage to them, and I have yet to even once lose one to an ammo explosion. (In 30+ games)
TLDR: The Jager is oddly shaped, and tends to take heavy damage to the torso and face. Placing ammo in arms instead of the face will save you from an early death. This mech is fragile, and is not kind to piloting errors or newer players. By having a build that can fight at any range, you help yourself defend from targets who would out-range or out-speed you otherwise.

I have a very similar build. More engine, more ammo, less armor, less heatsinks.
300 XL
6t UAC Ammo
10 DHS
384 Armor
I am basing ammo amounts off of other mechs but am passively keeping an eye on how much is left when a match is over or how much dmg I did if I ran out of ammo.

Are you using the stock weapons on the model you initially buy?

For the A I really started to like a build with 2 AC/5 (4t), 4 LRM5 (4t) and 2 MLs.
STD 250 engine
Endo, DHS
standard armor 288 points.

I finally have the JM6-S up to DHS and Endo and was able to make a superb upgrade of the Rifleman:
Engine: 300XL (74.8/82.2 kph)
Armor: STD 384
Internal Structure: Endo-Steel
Heat Sinks: 13 Double
Armament: 2 AC/5 (3t), 2 LLAS, 2 MLAS
In 5 fights it's done very well, taking first and second spot in a couple, and I only have it through initial training (no elite skills for it yet). At some point when I can get a lighter engine will try it with all 3050-era equipment (ultras, er and pulse and more sinks...slower, but worth the experiment)

The allure of the XL is like the haunting song of the siren.
From afar it is something you simply must have, yet the danger it represents is making you cautious. As you get closer to it, your resistance begins to crumble and you make excuses to yourself, like "I'll just hang at the back" or "I shall hide behind yonder atlas" or "indeed, my ammo is in my torsos, if they go I'm dead anyway" or "but... But... I can carry more Dakka?" or "verily, that siren has a luscious rack". Before you know it, you're hip deep in fish scales.
If you can make it work, all the more power to you, bu I've found that I end up doing far more damage with a standard, especially if I play conservatively as if I was actually toting an XL. The moving through molasses speed nerf is even bearable if you pick a direction at the start of a match and refuse to buy in to the mindless confusion everyone else exhibits when people who don't know where they want to go try to follow other people who are also directional commitophobes.

It's simple really. Run a XL if you need the tonnage for firepower and speed. It's a trade off. No need to get metaphysical about it.
Personally, I like firepower and speed so I rock XL engines. I find I don't survive much longer with an STD engine anyway.

The weight of ballistics+ammo really dictates you use an XL engine. If you're not using a loadout heavy on ballistics with those high mounted arms, I feel there are better mechs out there for that.
