Having said that, why is there a discussion? ECM has obviously become overpowered, especially when used on light 'mechs which already do a decent job of dodging LRMs with pure agility (as long as the pilot in question knows what they're doing).
These two screen caps are from MW4: Mercs, and regardless of the game's canonicity or even its unofficial status among MW games, both descriptions make sense. Isn't that all a person can ask for? Even with TAG, I need to close to 450m to shoot the darn thing, which makes my Long-Range Missiles useless once the enemy closes that distance. I understand the need for tactics, but everything in the Battletech universe has a purpose. No one weapon outbalances the other. Even machine guns, when you have enough of them and can fire them long enough, will prevail.
The fact of the matter is, ECM in its current form in MWO has made BAP useless. BAP was intended as a counter to ECM; and while it doesn't defeat ECM outright, it makes it less effective. That's called balance. So, when I have my Atlas equipped with BAP, and I go up against that ECM-equipped Command Atlas, at least I can get off a couple of LRM salvos before he pummels me at close range. Not because I'm a noob, not because I like to 'click-to-win' (trust me, I hate games that only involve clicking), but because I've built my Atlas for a certain role, which just happens to be Long-range support. This is the essence of Battletech. No one 'Mech is good at everything, they all have their assigned roles. However I digress, I just hope these images speak for themselves.
(Yes I know Active- and Passive-sensors haven't been implemented in MWO, but we can just ignore that little detail, I'm not saying these descriptions should be how they work. I'm just using them as an example.)
