I'm a member of a merc group, but, I also PUG, ALOT. Now while I fully admit ot not being "the best" 'mech warrior out there, I can confidently say that I have a reasonable amount of skill as demonstrated by the fact that in a typical match with 16 players I'm more often than not scoring in the top 3 in damage delivered.

That being said, I think I'm an ELO HELL right now because more often than not my games of late have me scoring 700+ points of damage (typically more than anyone else in the game) but on the losing side.

I get on these teams where, the people are one or more of the following:
  • extremely new to the game
  • haven't bothered optimizing their client (in spectator mode you can see they've still got default settings for arm lock and the like)
  • are habitual 'crap build' users (the famous 8 Flammer Hunchie, 4 machine gun Cataphract, and so on)
  • apparently are drunk/high, or are playing VERY distractedly
  • habitual DC'ers
  • TK'ers
  • Strategically/Tactically 'pants on head' ********
  • Using ancient equipment, or at the least a very low resolution mouse
  • Those bent on KS'ing each and every target to the point of not caring about friendly fire
It's frustrating that at least 50 percent of the games I play I lose because while I'm dishing out between 600 and 800 points of damage, the majority of my team can't seem to break 100.

I try and give advice, and typically the first thing I tell everyone is as follows:

"Stay together, but leave room to manuever, do NOT crawl up your team mate's a$$."

"Try to focus fire on same target, look for the SOLID red triangles, those indicate someone on your team has that targeted and you should target him too."

"Fast movers, always be prepared to head back to our base to stop the cap."

Stuff like that, but as typical in any game with any level of anonymity the responses I typically get aren't fit to repeat.

More often than not the opposing team seems to be following my advice to the great detriment of my team.

This, I am sure, has led to an artificially low ELO rating, which of course keeps me in the range of being grouped with these people.

I don't mind grouping with new players, they're fun! Everything in the game is new and exciting and cool to them, it helps keep the game 'fresh' in my eyes, however, game after game after game after game... Ugg...

The rest of those types of players as mentioned above, I could do without. In some extreme cases had they been next to me, physically, well... An NCIS head slap would have been incomming, at the least.

What this has resulted in is a majority of the games I play qualifying as old fashioned "PUG stomps", either on the receiving end, or on those rare occassions where I'm on the winning team.

My definition of a pug stomp is as follows:

Any match lasting 5 minutes or less, where 3 or less of the winning side are killed, while all 8 of the opposing team are destroyed.

Supposedly the limitation of PUGs to 4 man grouping AND the introduction of ELO was supposed to limit these. Of late and in my experience stomps seem to be on the increase.

Now, when I group with 2 or more of my merc unit the opposite extreme occurs. While I still typically will dish out lots of damage, the introduction of 2 more people who ALSO typically dish out damge over 200+, makes a difference in the amount of matches won, significantly. We don't always win of course, but the win rate seems to jump from around/less than 50% while pugging, to over 80% with at least 2 other merc members teamed.

In fact in grouping with members of my merc group last night resulted in only one loss that I can remember, and that was due to being capped on the Alpine map. All our heavy and assault 'mechs just couldn't move fast enough to stop it from where we were.

Now, I don't only always want to group with my merc group. Sometimes there's no one available, all other groups are maxed at their 4 man limit. Sometimes I only have time for a few rounds and don't want to drop in, play, then drop out. Sometimes I'm not in the mood to be sociable and don't wish to be cranky/rude to my friends.

So now I ask for suggestions: How do I break out of this ELO HELL I seem to be stuck in? How can I get out of reach of the dead heads, the intentionally obtuse, the abusers of modern chemistry?
