I'd like to make a suggestion on features to help new players purchase their first Mech with their C-Bill cadet bonus.
I wasted mine because I had no idea what I was doing at the time and I'd like to see something implemented to stop new players from spending their bonus unwisely.
My suggestion involves putting that initial bonus into a 'trust' fund that cannot be touched until the Cadet stage is over. Alternatively to the 'trust fund' just credit the entire bonus at once when the Cadet phase is over. Once over the new player should be notified (I wasn't, just suddenly noticed I wasn't making money any more) and taken to the Mechlab to purchase their new Mech. A few variants of the basic light and medium Mech's should be displayed for the player to choose from with some helpful tips about each Mech's loadout and play style and the option given to skip this and pick anything for those players who already know what they're doing.
Implementing this would improve the experience for new players and improve match ups as more players move to purchased and customised Mech's rather than Trial Mech's. It will give Cadets a basic understanding of 'role warfare' and help them on their way to deciding their chosen path. It will also slightly decrease the learning curve outside of combat.
My personal experience was that I didn't know I was getting a bonus and thus I purchased a Raven and outfitted it with junk because I had no clue what I was doing and what Mech's I wanted to play. The trial Mechs unfortunately didn't give me much of an idea about what I should buy and the Mechlab at that time was pretty unintelligible to someone new to MWO. I realise that the Mechlab is currently being reworked to be easier to understand for newbies and this is a good thing.
To lay out my suggestion in dot points:
- Cadet Bonus to be held in trust (or awarded in full) until (when) the Cadet stage is over, leaving the player with the full amount of c-bills, ready to be spent.
- New player automatically directed to the Mechlab after Cadet phase is over.
- New player presented with 3 or 4 basic variants, descriptions of load out and play style to help new player understand the descision they are making and help facilitate the understanding of role based warfare.
- Option to skip and purchase anything for experienced players or players who know what they want.
