It's counter-intuitive and takes people away from the game at hand. The vast majority of people backspace to fix errors because every other typing interface that exists on practically everything else in technology works like that. Peoples' smartphones have a speed backspace; it's standard protocol for every text entry system except this one. This is working in an unexpected manner. Nobody expects their backspace to be a one-push-one-erase function. That's what makes it slower.
It's more your reasoning that is silly. "Let people be careful about what they type in chat because it might be annoying" is not any kind of reason to keep this.
And as long as we're talking about spelling, it's "oriented". You're welcome.
