Now you are being silly, You talk about needing to be fast and yet you want backspace to work for combat chat? Imagine you are right in the thick of battle if you are a PUG you need to be able to relay information very quickly. You worrying about even needing to use a backspace at all is a great concern to me. As a teammate i dont care if your spelling is perfect

So if you type in below
"Engage Alpa as primrary"
Do you mean to tell me you are going to look at it, go "Oh Noes i have spelling mistakes" and go use backspace to go and correct that typo before you hit enter thereby wasting valuable time?

My point anyway was perhaps more orientated towards the non "mission critica"l chat that occurs in game.

It's counter-intuitive and takes people away from the game at hand. The vast majority of people backspace to fix errors because every other typing interface that exists on practically everything else in technology works like that. Peoples' smartphones have a speed backspace; it's standard protocol for every text entry system except this one. This is working in an unexpected manner. Nobody expects their backspace to be a one-push-one-erase function. That's what makes it slower.

It's more your reasoning that is silly. "Let people be careful about what they type in chat because it might be annoying" is not any kind of reason to keep this.

And as long as we're talking about spelling, it's "oriented". You're welcome.

Mild troll much?

That may be correct in your country, doesnt mean that it applies world wide.

Let me guess If I say colour I'm doing it wrong to?

Only when I think the premise is flawed at its concept. Your reasoning is still bad for keeping this "feature".

I concede your dictionary entry though, jackboot mode disabled.

+1 Internet for correct usage of the word "sardonic".

You guys do realize you can Ctrl+A to highlight everything you've typed and press backspace to delete the entire entry rather than spamming it to delete character by character?

Also you sometimes queue commands in-game when typing the letter in chat, like over-ride and power down...

Yes boss, sorry boss... I forgot it’s not good to have your own opinion on a forum.

My "opinion" is I found an improvement with the change of the delete key. As far as the OP with disappearance of text whilst chatting, yes that is a problem. As far as getting confused with the difference between t and y for chat? You can change them in options so that they are nowhere each other.

Seeing as you decent enough to say please this will be my last post on the matter. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what any of us think, it all comes down to what PGI thinks is right.

I would never have thought of this, thanks!

Backspace doesn't work like it does in almost any other chat, but ctrl+a works? I find it puzzling that a slightly advanced command usually found in text editors or more dedicated chat programs would even be coded in an in-game chat. I wonder if copy/paste works as well...

Regardless, thanks for the info!

@LordRush

You're a founder, so you've been around since the very beginning. You have seen everything here and can answer the question for yourself:

How probable is it that an old bug is fixed?

Even if they should ever bother to fix it, chances are high it will resurface later.

I can see the point, but this is communication we are talking about. The game DEMANDS an accurate communication level

The game also DEMANDS a way to turn off the 13 years old's, and their pathetically, illiterate, potty mouths.

Ive had the issue where I'm calling out a mech in a tile but by the time I'm about to put it in it changed course; I'd like to be able to simply backspace quickly and update where he is as opposed to saying D6 then typing again D4 and confusing everyone.

Matches are organic, things change in seconds. Maybe I was calling out to focus fire the atlas but a stalker is closer now that we rounded the corner. And the more minor; why make people enter "wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww"; it just clutters up the chat and it's already no scrollable.

Thanks to who posted the CTRL A didn't know that worked in game, but will be using it.

I think I'm in love. THANK YOU. I cannot fathom why someone would think forcing backspace to be push-per-character is a good idea, but this will do the trick.

Usually, if I need to backspace a bunch, it's because I accidentally initiated chat and tapped WASD a bunch before I figured out why the mech wasn't responding. No one wants that junk spammed into chat, which shows only a tiny chunk of text as it is.

The other reason is if I was trying to communicate something in a quickly-changing situation, where whatever I was about to say is no longer relevant, and thus, would be confusing to my teammates.

Takadept, your idea of forcing people to be more thoughtful, while having some merit in general, seems odd. If anything, making backspace hard encourages people to
1) Not take care to fix anything in comms, but rather correct in subsequent messages (increasingly pushing information "below the fold" at which point no one can read it), and also causing confusion.
2) Simply not bother with text communications at all (which is far more likely than laboring harder to make comms better).

Basically, the solution does not fit the goal.

I have seen this more than once and even got caught up into it.
Chat, when screens change, delete anything attempted to be typed.
I have also seen where people are conversing with their team and exposed location or lance makeup. This happened to me tonight. It is very confusing when hitting Y or T and typing something and you lose it or it goes to the other chat variable.

I propose only 1 key to bring on the chat and you switch between "All" and "Team" using Tab key. That will prevent the accidently press T and type.

Not everyone who 'SQUAWKS' is a Goon/Lowtax and most Goons are adults. They're strange people but very unlikely to be 13 year olds. Just putting that out there.

The broken backspace is just a minor pain. Chat really needs a major overhaul. But hey, we been asking for that since about forever.
