You just have to turn the engagement to be on your terms/terrain. Did a base (NOT CAP) rush with two spiders and a jenner last night right off the start - full throttle baby! Hit em before they were set up and caused hellachaos until the rest of the shufflers got there and found nothing but disorientated and damaged mechs that were ripe for surprise huttsex. Just pilot like you are a squirrel on speed+cokaine*+meth high test and you'll do well!
*Cokaine filtered? Really?

Exactly what this guy said. Run and gun, turn and jump, seek cover, double back, get behind, faux cap, call out weaknesses, rinse and repeat. Always, always resist the urge to stop and line up a shot.

I won't pilot ravens until they fix the hitbox issue (or there is a tournament on and I have to fight the epeen cheese suicide brawlers), and I just can't get into a jenner. The cockpit glass is just awful and my situational awareness goes into the toilet. I feel claustrophobic the whole match in one. Even though I do more raw damage, I am FAR less useful to the team as a whole. <shrugs>

Ran all 3 Spiders through the elite tree before spending 6 bucks on the "cheap xp exchange" weekend to grab the final master slot on all of them in one fell swoop.

Atlas got SplatCatted from behind. No chance to do something.
You mean he was so out of position due to his exceptionally poor situational awareness, that a Heavy mech sneaked behind him?
And far enuff from his team that no one could radar the Cat in or scare it away?
I almost pity him, but not because he died.

The 5D a solid 'mech though. I find what i like most about it, compared to the other spider variants, is the arm-mounted and extra energy hard point. The ECM is nice, though. Hopefully they buff machine guns so the 5k is a bit more useful some day.

the 5V is a bit lacking - its just a bad 5D, you dont even really have enough crits to make use of all the JJ.
its a shame the game's dedicated scout mech can't actually scout for fear of running into an enemy with streaks. spiders will be _awesome_ when the speed cap is fixed.

Fixed that for you.
I love the 5V. 2MPLs are enough to do plenty of damage if you know how and those 12 JJs are just pure fun to use.
I've never quite found a satisfying 5D build though...I either have to sacrifice jumpjets, or go with a depressingly low amount of firepower. If you take out the JJs for an AC, you lose ton's of survivability against other lights. Using machine guns and max JJ's gives you some survivability, but you can't do much damage.

Max everything and only sacrificing 1 JJ, with sustained DPS of a hair over 2 and 17 alpha. I switch out the med laser in the torso for tag if I'm with my lrm buddy, or flamer if I feel trollish. Gotta be close to do your papercuts, so it is not for everyone.
