Later on they could have effects like ECM blocking voice comms or just have noise coming from someone who is being effected by ECM. I don't think I've played a multiplayer game that has done this before.

That's your right and you probably run in a premade 100% of the time. Teamwork is not an issue for you.

Not true, I'm just not interested in listening to mouth breathers, people yelling at their spouse/offspring, or the other assorted weirdos one tends to find on public VOIP in video games. There's already enough stupid chat I have to read, I can only imagine what it would be like to listen to these folks.

voip is a must...period.
EDIT: and you know what? why not take it a step further...create a squad(/lance) system and make voip squad based. so people wont complain about 8 players screaming at eachother and add a mute button for those really anti social guys out there...problem solved everybody is happy and the game itself is so much better....cant be that hard, battlefield did this years ago...

So automatically everyone is a mouthbreather, you said you'd mute everyone. This game by far has the most mature community I've encountered in all my years gaming, but yes, there will be a few bad apples.

Only need a few and if you think this community is so mature, you must be skipping the forums and not reading in game chat. Anyways, all it takes is one to ruin things so why bother when I know there will be one. Pre muting saves me the trouble. I'm not saying you can't have it or not to develop it. I'm stating what I will do. I suspect I'm not the only one, so don't imagine that integrated VOIP is some magic fix for what plagues PUGs.

You read my ******* mind. BF2 and 2142 iirc used to have squads and an overall commander. The squad leaders could talk to the commander directly over their own voip channel and request supply drops/orders. All talk, team talk, squad talk, commander talk. Implement all of this with ECM jamming voice comms and wow this game would be truly unique.

That'll never ever happen, because people would just use 3rd party software to completely bypass that silly interference.

While I REALLY wish we had in-game VOIP, I can also see Notch's point of view. There are (theoretically, anyway) 16 people in a match. I'd say that, if given a random group of 16 people in real life, 12 of them would be one of the following:
- Loud and annoying (mouth breathers and open-mics fall into this category)
- Immature
- Jerk
- Super Jerk
- Troll
- Whiny
VOIP has it's downsides...

Stand around a warpgate in PS2. And you'll see this guy has a point.
The difference is squads and platoons 'normally' don't have this issue. But then again, squads and platoons are PS2's equivalent to premade groups.
Also this community is FAR from being mature. They still cannot grasp the fact that they should follow simple forum rules such as using the search function to find a thread about a topic they are about to great first. And instead post 3-4 of them in a day.
Or make protest threads rather than using the suggestion forum.
Or the biggest one: Judging other players because they group/don't group, by their loadouts, by even how much they spend on things in the game, and by how much they like/dislike the game.

TF2 has open voice and for the most part everyone gets along. If it becomes an issue a simple vote to mute function would probably do the trick. Someone keeps trolling in VOIP vote mute him after so many votes he is muted for say a week.
