In most mechwarrior titles I never had an issue with pop tarts as they made themselves an easy target for multiple opposing snipers. Teams that knew how to play would shred opposing pop tarts apart in seconds assuming the team utilizing the strategy wasn't 100% pop tarts, pubs still had issues with it, but pubs have issues with almost any coordinated style of play.
I now have a problem with it only because of weapon convergence, although I understand PGI is working to fix those issues, as is now though it's quit frustrating to the point I don't waste ammo on pop tarts in the air.
LRMS, SSRMS, and lasers are certainly still viable against any mech with jump jets, but PPCs, Gauss, and ACs are a crap shoot against air born targets because of convergence, more times than not the rounds go through the mech, or past them.
A lot of this has to do with the fact the air born mech is only visible for a few seconds, sometimes it's not long enough to get convergence to work fast enough assuming you’re even selecting the target that appeared from behind cover. The back ground behind the air born mech is usually just sky which seems to make the convergence go wonky.
Meanwhile because of the angle a pop tart mech fires, the ground around its target is close enough to the target itself, weapon convergence isn't nearly as big an issue even without the target selected in the HUD.
This isn't to say it's impossible to hit pop tart mechs with PPC and Gauss fire, it just puts you a huge disadvantage that I don't think most people are even aware of. I can only assume that once convergence is tweaked this won’t be as much as a problem, but for now don't waste too much fire on them. Hunt them down and kill them on the ground.

solution: arm lock its coming next patch.
wont' do much for projectile speed. but hopefully they do it right and it eliminates torso/arm convergence issue.

I don't see this problem. Generally when I'm shooting at a pop-tart, he's quite far away (500+m), so convergence really isn't affected much. I'll shoot jumping Cataphracts with 4xPPC all day.

Ive been able to hit "pop tarters" numerous time especially if they come up in the same spot damn right they are about to lose that CT armor or maybe die from headshot
