When/if they get mic support working, I would like to see something that has never been done before. When a pilot toggles his mic on to speak, have the audio effects that are playing in his cockpit transmit along with his voice. That way if a pilot is calling for help, you can hear the pounding his mech is taking in the background. Then, run the entire package through a sound modulator that makes it sound like a radio transmission, complete with white-noise in the background. (Like Star Wars IV when the X-wings are doing their famous 'standing-by' radio chat.)

Also, if you really wanted, you could introduce 'premium' radio effects that are different variations of noise modulation so that a pilot can choose the type of distortion he wants. (Then again, maybe not.)

While this wouldn't really have an effect on game ballance, it would provide a level of immersion to really get the 'feel' of being a lance pilot. It would also lend a sense of urgency in the midst of combat when multiple comms are broadcasting calls for reinforcement.

Thoughts/comments?

Easy enough. Just have it transmit the sounds that is going on for you in game. Unless, the person has there volume down on the speakers. You would hear it anyway.

No.

Some pilots are hard enough to understand without any additional and totally unnecessary background noise. Besides, I have my own sounds and audio cues I have to listen to -- it would only add confusion to battle.

Which Betty warning is his? Which is mine? Which one of us is getting pummeled by Gauss or missiles or whatever?

Well that's the idea behind having the mic transmission frequency spectrum thinned out; so you can tell what noise is coming from his comm and what is hitting you in the face. I'm also not suggesting that the background noise should be so loud it drowns out the voice on the comm, merely that it augments the experience by adding a bit more grit.

IMHO, this would be one of those 'detail' things that new players should go "wow! I feel like that other player is really in his mech and not sitting at his PC eating Doritos!" and veteran players can appreciate without being annoyed by it.

P.S. Real war is confusion and chaos and panic. Just sayin'. So if you want a truely immersive experience, you have to embrace the chaos. :D

We've already got Betty and battle noises on our end. Plus, they apparently will be adding in keyboard-triggered voice messages like "Need help in (insert map coordinate here)!" -- they're already in the game files, but not implemented yet.

No need for more confusion/chaos/panic added to that.

Besides ... there's probably a good reason that it hasn't been done before. Is it even possible? I'm not all that familiar with voice programs, but I've never heard sounds transmitted from someone else's computer unless they had external speakers that were then picked up by the microphone.

Press button commands with pre-voiced narrations? Crap. Now I'm going to have to listen to that one immature player spam the "Woohoo!" key like in Tribes.

Slightly Off-topic: I really hope they give us the option to disable pre-recorded shoutouts and the text chat.

Back on Topic: Your concerns would be solved if they could implement options with volume sliders for backround noise in transmissions for those that would find it desirable/undesirable.

The reason I brought this up is because I love the convenience of voice chat, but I hate how I can tell the other player is sitting in his/her half-finished basement from the way his/her voice reverberates cleanly and crisply. Just adding some background noise from his cockpit into his transmissions and then filtering the result would go a long way to making the experience more immersive.

Look up ACRE(Advanced Combat Radio Environment) for ArmA2 with ACE mod. We could have something like that. Terrain and extreme distance weaken your signal. Very immersive and enjoyable, but also can be quite annoying at times.

Players who like the feature could turn it on. Players who don't like the feature could leave it off. No problem.
