So for the "Be a Hero" tournament PGI was able to separate all the mech weight classes into different groups. Why not in the next tournament have a category for PUG's, 2-mans, 3-mans, and 4-mans? Points can be awarded based on how well you performed in the match and what kind of makeup you were up against. This way fighting a team with 2 4-man premades would provide the best opportunity for points, while fighting against a team of all lone wolves would still give points, but not as many. This way people who would rather play with their friends can still compete in a tournament.

This also gives more options for prizes to more people, so I would think more people would participate. I also think that you would get less complaints during the tournament of people fighting premades since performing well (even if they lose) would still be worth quite a bit.

This is probably a lot more complicated than I have any clue about, but I think it can be done.

The underlying problem is that they don't have a queue for it ready to go. For right now and probably the near future, it's either solo tournaments or 8 man tournaments until they figure out a framework for small groups meshing into a working queue just for them.
