I used to carry ammo there all the time (some builds still have some there).. but one day in my splat cat I took a crit to the head (thought I had armor there, but can't really confirm now, after the fact).. ammo explosion took off my head. The only damage I had was very light dusting to armor, and no head. ... I moved my ammo after that match.

Though, I had 2200+ matches in before that happened and up to that point, -always- carried ammo in the head slot. I guess it just depends on how early in the match it is.. later means you've probably used that ammo.. but if someone gets lucky early, it can be a big ouchy.
