Good thing then that
1. The BT MG isn't a .50 - ffs man, we're talking about 'mech scale weaponry here. Use your head.
2. 'Mech armour isn't tank armour, it's ablative (read: sci-fi space fantasy stuff that has nothing to do with real life).

MGs in BT do as much damage to 'mechs as an AC/2. In MWO they do 1/10th of the damage of an AC/2. That's a bad design decision, and a horrible balance decision. It needs to be changed.

I am on your side here, I want the thing buffed, I thought I read somewhere that it was a 50 cal. Also I don't buy into the this is sci-fi stuff..you're either using reflective, reactive, or some other sort of real armor on these mechs. You should have a good grounding in some sort of real physics.

Anyways. Even if it's not the mag shot the hole between .5 and 6 tons and the limited role of light ballistics mechs leaves a hole that needs to be filled.

Well, you read wrong. Putting a .50 on a 'mech would be like a person using a 0.1-0.2mm gun against an armoured opponent.

My point was that we don't have ablative armour today, so there's no knowing what modern-day weaponry would or would not do to that kind of armour (seeing as it's made-up and all).

The closest we have is the ablative heat shield used on some spacecraft for re-entry.

Real world comparisons are often not useful in game balancing. However, some mech MGs are canonically identified as having a caliber of 20mm and I've seen none that are identified as being any smaller. They're certainly larger than .50 caliber.

PROBLEM 1:
Year Availability 3072

PROBLEM 2:
If they jump to 3072 you'll probably be way more interested in RACs and HGRs.

I don't think they'll be making an exception for a weapon that doesn't arrive for 22 years.

Its not balanced at all compared to any energy weapon. 2.5 dps would be equal to two ML which would generate 32 times more heat, and have less range.

If you've not already seen it, have a look at this thread: http://mwomercs.com/...-new-ballistic/ He's looking at improved MG Arrays and Gatling's.

Just buff the MG already and be done with this insanity.

Forget it: MGs in mech to mech combat are as usefull as nipples on a breastplate so to speak, and that is fine. They are an anti infantry weapon. Not the MGs problem we have no infantry around.

Actually it's an insanely effective weapon if you had them massed in TT. It's just that designs would carry a whole ton of ammo for 2 guns instead of a half ton for 8 in general. That one Solaris 'mech with like 12 MGs is hilariously powerful.

So pray tell, oh sage one; if they are strictly anti-infantry why do they do 2 damage to 'mechs in BattleTech? The exact same damage as the AC/2?

Or are you arguing that the AC/2 is an anti-infantry weapon as well? It does the same damage as the MG, after all.

The MG is a mech-sized weapon, designed to deal damage to 'mech armour. It's not your piddly little man-portable weapon; it's 5-10 times the size of that. It also happens to be very good at dealing damage to infantry, but that's neither here nor there since we have no infantry in MWO.
