Hi. I would Use a 1 dragon actually, you can throw a 320xl engine in it, ( 95 km/h with speed tweak) and 2 srm 4, ac/10,
1 medium laser, 1 medium pulse laser. Use double heatsinks with it. Other than the legs the mech is fully armoured as well, and oh the little ones dont like it. It is fast, well armoured and I find it does a medium mechs job better than the medium mechs do. Running at 95 clicks does give you a pretty big advantage, and like you i was always a light mech pilot and i couldnt give up the speed i was used to, all my mechs need to be going 76 km or faster for me to be comfortable piloting them. The dragon is a decrease in turning and your deceleration and acceleration though. It gives the feeling of being ponderous, but your not, you just not a rabbit like you were in a jenni, or spider. The center torso of a dragon is big, but you do have arms and a torso, so keep your mech strafing other muchs, keeping your side torso's to them. Your arms in a dragon are the most useful thing, they can almost go totally sideways, so whatver weapons in those arms, are great for tracking little mechs. i often like to put pulse lasers and lb/10x in there arms, though you can learn to use an ac/10 eventually. ( the dragons arm cannons Aim strangely, it takes some getting used to).

Versatility Wanted.

If you want simple and want something that'll be effective, I'd try something more like this:

2 weapon groups. One for the arm-mounted stuff. One for the torso. Can't get much simpler than that.

I tried this today and am positively surprised

mouse 1 - default hill sniper weapon in shoulder
mouse 2 - dakka canon in case I can safely be far enough in the open to use the right arm
mouse 3 - backup weapons MPLaser+SRM for melee punch, a.k.a. panic button
Thanks again for this suggestion

Hm that's interesting to know. I bought the Dragon specifically to be my all around test/learning/fun mech. Normally I would use lighter weaponry (ERLL + LB10) and some team stuff, together with an XL350. But when I play together with my friend's YLM, I take the bulkier setup. The Dragon is great for learning different weapons, because it can mount pretty much anything. I'm getting better with ballistics, slowly but surely. Lights are still AC immune, but today I managed to lead the weapon properly against some big targets somewhat reliably.
In short: Dragon is awesome

Just a quick update. I'm running the Dragon 1N in bit**slap mode, and so far it seems to work.
Now if I manage to hit cockpit zones more often, everything will be perfectly fine.

mouse 1: long range harassment (ER LLaser)
mouse 2: LB10 + 2x SRM4 in the face
mouse 3: TAG, to mark stuff for the team
