There are many similar threads. Looking at them will be handy. Lots of advice. Simply searching "first mech" or "new" will do it.
Until then, here: A player's regrets in starting with something heavy, a reference to the commonly suggested mech for new players, and a gripe about the great old jump jets compared to kinda old jump jets.

If you mean starting a unit of players (a "clan" in other games, though that has a special meaning in B Tech fiction) you can just use the forums to gather a bunch of FRR players, call yourselves something and play together on comms. I am assuming from the flag in your post that you joined as the FRR faction and not as a lone wolf.
Starting a merc unit is basically the same. At the moment there is really nothing that units can do expect play together and sometimes try to run ad hok challenges that require some luck in having the two units get in the same match.
