I like playing medium/heavy fast brawlers, mostly with some mix of SRM/laser. Lately I've been wondering about taking 1 LRM - say a 10 or 15 if it fits. The idea would be that as I move around a lot in a game I can get into good positions to lob a few volleys as I close in or retreat or if it is a standoff.

Obviously I'm giving up some damage potential in a brawl so I'm trying to decide if the exta flexibility is worth it. Has anyone else tried this/have thoughts? I'm running my cent tonight with 2 srm6, 2 ML, 1 LRM10 and it doesn't stink but I'm not sure that it is as good as just having 3 SRM6.

You could just trade your LRM for longer range laser like large laser. Also it depends on which mech and what your build is.

A single 10 or 15 won't do much because AMS will kill 5 missles per second.

I've found a fast-ish (~80kph) LRM mech works well even in "brawling". As long as you don't get facehugged. It also gives you an option against short range maulers. Kiting a brawler atlas or stalker is kind of amusing.

I'm currently running a 2xLRM15, ERPPC, 2ML Catapult with 300XL and the LRMs get a lot of use in the 180-250 range.

I'd try to go with at least 15 tubes and don't use it much at the longer ranges. Use it in 500-200m as you are closing. Also, you should be able to maneuver very well and still maintain lock.

no problem in adding a smaller LRM to your brawler (especially if you can keep your brawl between 180 and 200 meters) it'll give your mech some long range/low aim requirement firepower for when you're closing the distance (not that many people carry AMS anyways)

i don't know about being so definate about the numbers, I've fired my a solo lrm 15 at a mech with ams before and it only wiped out 2-3 missles

One of my 4SP builds is 4 medium lasers, a TAG and 2 LRM10s with 2 tons of LRM ammo, it works great, especially if you can stay in the 180-270 range. Ammo is fairly limited as I use a standard 260 engine, though obviously if you went XL you'd trade survivability for that extra ammo and heat sinks.

I've toyed with the idea of using 1 SRM6 and 1 LRM10 (instead of either of my 4SP builds that have 2 SRM6 or 2 LRM10), but I haven't really found a setup I like using a split like that yet. Then again, space is extremely limited on my 4SP as I use both FF and endo-steel.

the 2 lrm10 hunchie is a good build, it can brawl well (4 meds) it can help long range (lrm 10s) and you can tag people when you're brawling with them (pugs tend to jump on those tag marks like piranas)

Got the same build :)

Except I have a STD255 engine and have lost a bit of armour for the extra LRM ammo.

Runs at 90 odd with speed tweak and is just a fun mech to play. Much prefer the LRMs to SRMs I had on it.

all i can say is that LRM´s as direct fire weapons on the move are very fun and a nice addition for a mobile midrange supporter (always bring a tag^^). for a pure brawler...well the name says it, i´d stick to closerange weapons

I enjoy brawling and Ive tried to put LRM racks on my brawlers and It has never worked out for me. Id just stay with SRMs.

I tried a hunchie with LRM15+artemis + 5 MLs + TAG but I never was satisfied with the result. 85km/h (std 240 engine + speed tweak) was reasonable enough in order to keep distance.

Yesterday I saw a Catapult with 3 SRMs and 3 LRMs and after following his playing it was plain obvious he didnt know if he should take distance to enemy or hug him, so this was pretty much the same symptom which I had.

Mix of close and long range weapons is a tricky one (especially in meds), jack of all trades but master of none...

I'm not going to dissuade you from taking a balanced mech. Often LRMs come in handy when you are either out of range or out of visual contact with the enemy. Even an LRM5 wouldn't go amiss imo. Could be a difference maker in a light battle.

I've seen people mounting LRM 5's on a brawler just to make people duck and cover while they try to get in close.

My founder's Catapult (which I rarely use because I love my hunchies so much) has 1 LRM10, 1 SRM6 (both with artemis) and depending on how I feel 2xERLg, 2xLarge or 4xMed. 14 DHS and AMS. - firepower of 51, heat eff of 1.27. std 260.

use the LRM moving to engage, then the ER Large. once engaged, the srm6 and if equipped, the 4xMed. not too bad if I watch my distance from the opposing force

I have the same mech only without the pretty founder nose on it (stupid snuby nose) but I'm running twin A-LRM15s 3 meds and a tag, it works pretty well if I can keep the enemies at about 200 meters.

LRMs, particularly with Artemis IV, work best as direct fire weapons, so yeah - there's no reason not to supplement your brawler with some. They're particularly good for longer-ranged brawlers for whom SRM6 require getting closer than would otherwise be necessary.

I'm grinding up my first Heavy at the moment, a -C1 with two ArtLRM20s, 4MLAS, typically I'll aim to engage direct fire from about 700 meters on the approach, optimal fighting distance is around 250-350m. Only suffered for the lack of personal TAG once, but it's obviously easy to swap it out for an MLAS.

I feel like LRMs would be unnecessary for fast brawlers who could get into position easily, and need as much tonnage as they can get for their close-range weapons after spending so much on their larger engine.

The benefit of using LRMs on a brawler would be to allow yourself to attack when you don't have a line of sight, but only slow ones would have an issue getting into position. Meanwhile, slower brawlers would also have the tonnage to spare.

An LRM 10 on a brawler could work. It would give you some long range ability, but not make you a 'threat'. You would be better having a ER Large Laser though I would think. You have a reach weapon BUT one that still can be used to brawl.

I do it.

The bonus is you can use the LRMs to pin a straggler down and keep them occupied with looking for cover as you close in. The payoff is you're down one weapon once you're within 240m.

It also gives you something to do while you're waiting for the brawls to start.
