Were these mechs actually confirmed as Founder mechs? I seem to have missed that announcement?

They are not explicitly confirmed, unfortunately. The implication is pretty strong that Jenner/Hunchback/Catapult/Atlas will be the choice for a founder's mech, and it's easy to see that by extension they are most likely the same lineup for a starter mech.

It is confirmed that we will start with one mech, and be able to choose from one in each class. It seems quite likely they will be the same four, but we can only guess at this point. hint hint, Garth

Well, there goes my theory that the Commando would be the beginning starter mech! Unless the Jenner is just for Founders.

We don't know which ones will be starts for regular players. I kind of doubt that players will be able to start out with an Assault, as those are probably going to be more expensive. My guess is that starter mechs will be limited to Light, Medium and maybe Heavy mechs, although I didn't look at their costs so perhaps I am off here. ;)

Catapult might be the best for "big damage." Long range and Jump Jets together let you deal that damage to whomever you choose.
On the other hand... don't let anyone get close, k?

They've already confirmed the starting lineup includes one from each class.

They don't want any one class to appear more desirable than another, they're all equally valid, and limiting access to Assaults would just make them appear unfair or in some way superior.

I disagree, but I see what you're getting at - for me, we want new pilots in Assaults. Why? They'll survive mistakes and learn. And as they learn, they'll realise that those light, quick 'Mechs are picking them apart, so they'll try something new. Stick a new pilot in a light, and he rounds a corner head-on at an Assault, gets quickly destroyed, hates his experience, moves on.

This isn't to say Assaults take no skill, merely that heavier 'Mechs allow mistakes where lights don't.

Just to clarify (as I can't spend as much time here as I'd like) that is 'you can choose one mech form each class to start with', and not 'you will only ever be able to have one mech from each class at any given time', correct?

my starter mech would either be a centurion or a dragon with the autocannons replaced with Gauss rifles.

It's 'you can pick ONE mech to start with from a list of four mechs', and the list is one of each class.

Glad to hear it. I tend to be a bit of a collector in games and I am sure I'll end up with more than one mech of each type that I'd like to keep in my hanger.

how many times will I have to reiterate this :|

Q: How will the player’s initial ‘mech(s) be selected?
A: Players will get 1 free mech to start. They can chose from 4 1 in each class – light, med, heavy, assault. [BRYAN]
A: You will be able to choose from a selection based on the role you want to play. [RUSS]

you won't be able to pick just any mech to start.

You want a damage dealer? Take the Offense class, the heavy or assault available to you in this class is just what you're looking for (I'd say Awesome and Cataphract). They aren't the heaviest of the heavy hitters, but they deliver quite a punch and especially the Cataphract allows for solid customization to make it work for you. For people playing a MW game for the first time it might be best to use mostly beam weapons, with a light or medium AC or LRM (more shots = better chances for learning how to use the weapon).

Sorry to all the Atlas friends, but when it comes to damage dealing this 'Mech is actually sub-par for an assault. Ok, it has an AC-20, but only 1t ammo, same with the LRM-20. This basically means, that you're down to using your SRM and the medium lasers after half a minute. If you can make every shot with your big guns count, good for you! But chances are slim that you will hit every time.

I'm actually looking forward to piloting Light and Medium Mechs. With the stated design goal of making every class useful on the battlefield, I think it will be great fun to fight in the faster Mechs.

I'll probably start with a medium, guess that makes me a hunchback pilot!

I have some experiance with mech warrior, played mw 3, And I am really looking forward to the light mechs speed. But I do see the point in giving the newbies the heavy armor for protection while they learn. To all the experianced players, just go easy on the new guys

I agree with this i plan to have an Atlas but the first thing coming out are the Ballistic weapons.. to be replaced with a PPC or whatever it may beable to hold on that hard point.

I plan on getting the Founder Atlas as it's probably the most expensive and I adore its new skull, I expect lots of noob rushing at the beginning anyway :) Besides with the extra $20 in free credits I can buy I nice heavy or medium that's not offered right out.
