Still don't see how XL engine is 100% a must for lights (and fast mediums).

1) You will be able to run a 250 STD Engine on a 35 ton light w/o issues.. but trying to get the speed you genuinely to compete, having a 295 STD engine on same mech will eliminate so many options.

2) Your weapon options are limited when you don't use an XL engine, and the less tonnage you have to work with, your DPS (or simply damage output) does suffer. You could always use a slower engine, but then you'll be taking more damage and for a light mech, they don't have that much armor to begin with.

It's a must, unless you want to see how effective you are w/o one. You'll either not survive or have very little impact to the outcome of the match. Speed is essential for getting to the cap points and just as useful to run away from the vicious 3L or packs of lights that will decimate you if you choose to engage them alone.

I only lose 1 of my 3 weapons when I lose one of my side torsos.

Have a weapon in the LA, RA, and CT. SRM ammo is in two different locations to reduce chance of ammo explosion and if it does happen, I still have some of that ammo left (along with CASE for staying alive).

Still don't see how XL engine is 100% a must for lights (and fast mediums).

There's really only two advantages to lights; they are small and they are fast, both of which improve their ability to survive confrontations. Speed, however, has the added benefit of being able to get you where you need to be tactically to add some leverage. Speed also improves your ability to survive combat because it makes targeting your ct a non-viable option. By not taking an XL engine, you are basically making your Commando a fast medium with little armament and armor. There is no niche for that to function well.

My point about losing a torso section wasn't that your weapons would be lost, it was that, with an XL engine, it is highly likely that the rest of your torso sections will be almost gone anyway. It is probably 1 in 30 games in my 3L or Treb 3C, where the side torso is blown out first, and the CT isn't at least orange. Honestly, when a light doesn't have an XL engine, it's always a surprise when they lose their side torso and don't go down....and then on the next volley, BOOM, they're gone.

ok so
i just opened smurfy...
took raven 3L, maximized armor, made it endo, ferro and dhs
kicked in std 295... remaining tons are 2.36... ehm so i put in an ECM and med laser? yes thats right

ok so i kept lowering engine till something half decent showed up... at std 255 i had ecm, ML,2streaks+2tons... but speed? 129.8 with speed tweak... thats about 30 kph less than max speed and with hell a lot less firepower

ok now i lowered it to have common OP raven3L loadout... but with 225 engine which means 114.6kph with speed tweak

so where is this an advantage?
if i put it to max speed its pretty much unarmed, if i go some midway and encounter jenner he will tear me apart, if i maximize firepower i will be slow enough to be hit by most weaponry consistently... so im no longer op
yes please limit ravens so they will be no longer be able to mount xl engines :)

Well one imbalance with the Raven is that its able to go faster than the Commando. The Commando isnt able to fit a max size engine and all its weapons... so is forced to use a 195 or 200 instead of a 210.

The Raven's max engine should be like 260 or 265 so the Commando and Spider go faster.

It's kinda crazy when an XL engine for my Spider costs twice as much as the mech does? Why are XL engine prices so high?

Because if you didn't have expensives things to buy, you'd eventually have too much money.

XL is a signifiant upgrade, it's normal that it takes some small amount of effort to get. You can easily get 1M/hour, it's not that hard to earn a few millions.
