So I find that I really get mixed up about damage locations. It's the 'my right or your right' dilemma.
In regards to my own mech, the HUD's damage screen shows my own mech facing towards me. So lets say the damage screen shows that my armor is stripped on my left torso. But... the screen shows my mech facing towards me, so does that mean my right side armor is actually stripped? In turn, the back armor on my damage screen shows the mech facing away from me... or towards me... I can't tell. My perspective on how to view my damage screen is all over the place.
In turn, when I target an enemy mech, the enemy damage screen shows the mech facing me. Often in this case, the enemy mech is actually facing me. So does that mean a stripped armor on the enemy left torso is actually on the left side? Or is it backwards as if it's showing his damage screen from his perspective?
I'm... so... confused. I generally just result to shooting the center torso, because I know that's in the center lol.

The paper-dolls have a "L" and "R"; this represents the actual left and right of the mech. Take a look at the representations, locate the indicators, and I hope that helps... :-D

The health indicator is placed for the pilots always. Ie, yours is set for you, right is right and left is left, the enemy is set for his, his left is left and his right is right, when he faces you, its the same, but opposite because he is facing you (if you want to hit his left, then you shoot on your right).
As you learn what to shoot, and what mechs carry and what they look like, you stop relying on it to let you know whats working. I get confused too, but I shoot an Atlas in the right back to remove the A/C-20, I look up and see he is exposed, I just keep on shooting.
Just accepting it and going for the center works too. Its clear and makes sense and works.

The damage display for your own 'Mech is oriented toward you. If someone shoots your right side, the right side of the display will flash. If the left arm of the display is bright red, then your left arm is heavily damaged and nearly ready to fall off.
The damage display for enemy 'Mechs is also oriented from your perspective. If the display's right torso is bright red, shoot to the right of center to destroy it. It doesn't matter that it's "his" left side -- it's always displaying from your perspective.
