I think a good game type would be to have a grounded dropship as your base instead of that dropzone/supply point marker thing.
It would have to be on bigger maps, but a dropship could shoot at enemies coming near the base, could act as a resupply and repair point, and could be very hard to kill. it would make assault game types focus more on tactically engaging the enemy team and not a base race, as a single Light mech cant just run over and take the point.
Now on the other hand, if your teams strategy was to take the ship, then there would have to be a coordinated effort to do so. Also staging a defense near the ship would be highly valuable, as the ship can aid in the defense.
I think it would slow down game play and make it more strategic. It would give you the opportunity to send scouts to see what the enemy is doing, set up LRM support, etc etc.

So, in essence your "base" is a dropship that can support you, but once destroyed you lose the match?
If not lose the match, probably make it so that when a dropship is destroyed, it explodes and damages nearby mechs (if it can rearm, it's reasonable to assume that it's packed to the brim with ammos).

you do know though that military dropships are armed heavily enough to just eradicate 8 mechs?

Yes, the firepower doesn't have to be "to the book", I think that its a nice balance point to make taking a base something that is a commitment and require planning to take, more a deterrent from attacking most the time at all. I think that people go with the assault type game for the mech combat, and less the capturing of a small "base". The capture aspect should exist as a means to make things more interesting, but I think that having a dropship makes things much more interesting and ads a lot of depth to things. If you wanted to handicap the dropship some so that's its not an insane amount if firepower, the match type could be protecting a damaged, grounded dropship that is operating at diminished capacity. Or it could me an asymmetrical game type with one side having a small number of mechs and dropship with the other team having more mechs. Also, no matter how you do it, I think that it would be better on a large map with 16 on 16
