Personally I think this should have been implemented quite some time ago. But I understand testing constraints, etc.

Feedback time:

Alright, this is a great addition, if a little lame at first, but the point is not solo matches everyone. However, I am a Mech veteran personally, playing since MW3 etc. Too young for the others.

Anyway, the main use I found for it was what it was designed for: Heat threshold testing, loadouts, and combat practice. I also realized that another factor came into play. Marksmanship training. Either way, as it is now, considering the rest of the game's status as a beta, I say leave it as is, but after the last target is destroyed make a pop-up dialog box that asks either to reset the mech, continue training, or to just exit.

Idea for the Future of the Testing Grounds:

Maybe once the game itself is more solid and around release (either at or a little before) add in limited AI to the mechs to practice combat situations. Maybe even with progressive difficulty waves, like the "Progressive Waves" mode in MW3.

Obviously there should be some form of limitation on such a mode, since MWO is designed for, well, ONLINE combat. I.E. 5 Progressive Waves to get new players/old players somewhat up to speed on how MWO plays versus the others and to give some form of practice.

I say any further suggestions should be added here. Or this thread moved to an appropriate existing one.

This please. I know this is an online game, I like fighting people online. Somtimes though I just want to have no stress fun in my mech. No matter how good a game goes online its still stressfull. Problem is I am very attached to my mechs and this game, it pretty much makes all other games except terraria unfun for me. Some even limited A.I. would be killer for some no stress fun in my mech. I already spend a ton of time blowing up the stationary targets for some no stress fireworks but man if there was A.I. in those things, it would be stellar and im sure a lot of folks would love it. Those who dont care, dont have to touch it.

I completely agree with this!

Even if it's a simple patrolling "duck-shoot" path for the targets to patrol around the whole map on a set path, from where i can sit on a hill with a cooler of beer and pot-shot them to blow off some steam, that would be great...

A bonus though would be if they would turn and fire their weapons at me if i'm in range and firing arc....

nothing too hardcore, just somewhere i can go to cool my heels and shoot zombie-mechs after being whacked 8-0 by chest-beating pug-stomp thugs...

Yeah tribes ascend the FTP Tribes game by Hi-Rez (awesome game) Has a practice mode like this. Last time I played it guys did not turn their guns on you but they did have paths they would follow so you would get some marksmanship training along with testing the weapons and maps out. Would be huge if MWO had even that. Though getting fired on would be <gush> amazing.

Edit: It would also be nice if we could drop in the training mode with a friend.

Two suggestions...

1. Stats/scores/timers to enhance the information we get from a session.
2. On large maps like Alpine, perhaps group the Mechs closer to the spawn area. If you're looking to explore, you can still do so, but if you're looking to test a weapons package, you might have a very long way to travel to get things done as is.

That too. Especially new players to the genre, where i could take a student out on the field, and demonstrate to them the basics of movement, torso twist etc.

Even if you-re only allowed to drop with ONE other person, that could make all the difference. I don't WANT xp or cash for killing stuff there. I'd like it to REALLY SHINE as a training ground where novices can get some experience and advice from a more experienced player.

I want to teach somebody, then play a game of hide-and-seek with them, getting them to train against a moving target without the pressure of being turned to slag for making a single noob-like mistake, and learning from it instead of ragequitting and uninstalling the game.

yes that's exactly what we've been wanting for ages but ages is about the timespan it takes for the small dev team to create such a thing. AI is complecated so saddly it's miles down the track and that's why even now we still have no bases with automated turrets etc :)

but i really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really want this stuff!

Yeah, I'd LOVE fully implemented AI as well... But (speaking from a complete layman's background) I wonder how difficult it would be to code in a simple looping path that, say, for example, would make a mech zombie around the crater in Caustic.

It doesnt have to be anything amazing like the AI doing cartwheels and shooting and stuff, just a moving target kind of thing instead of the stationary ones we have now.

Otherwise, how difficult would it be to simply allow one more person to drop into the grounds for a zero-gains sparring sesion?
