I read bits and pieces about the developers including a pre-game, "dropship" deal. I'm not entirely sure what they're doing with it now, but I had a good idea to let the players choose which 'Mech they wanted before a match.

You're in a party, and in order to ready up you need to choose one 'Mech, not a specific chassis. So for example, I pick an Cataphract, ready-up, and the party leader launches the game once everyone else picked their 'Mech/ready-up'd. Now here's where it gets interesting:

Your party is put in a pre-game dropship with a player list (and any other useful UI) with two maps to choose from. It is decided by votes, and is only on a quick 5 second timer so the game can get rolling. It seems that Tourmaline Desert got more votes than River City, and now is when you pick your 'Mech chassis.

I just want to note this heavily benefits people who have purchased more than one chassis with their 'Mech. It should be on every player's priority list to get Elite for things like Speed Tweak, etc so this goes right along with it.

So instead of your CTF-4X Brawler with 4 AC/5s, you choose your jumpjetting CTF-3D with the ER PPCs and Gauss. The chassis screen lasts 5 seconds, and if no 'Mech is chosen the first 'Mech is just the default (to prevent people from not choosing a 'Mech and delaying a drop onto the map). The loading screen comes up and you begin your battle.

With this solution, not only have we solved the, "wrong 'Mech for the map" problem, but general tonnage will not change, which means ELO will not be affected.

Thoughts?

I think letting players pick from among their four selected 'mechs might work better. That would eliminate the problem of a player with only one 'mech of a certain chassis being much less adaptable than one with several.

That is significantly better than my idea of one 'Mech, but changes the overall tonnage of each group, which I'm guessing would affect ELO. And like I said, it gives incentive to have more than just one chassis (or maybe two of the same 'Mech?). While I agree, it doesn't benefit players with one chassis/'Mech, that is not the case for majority and those who are in that situation are looking to unlock Basics on their first chassis of said 'Mech (and that situation is short-lived).
