im so sick to death of people whinning about boating and seeing it as a game breaking, soul destroying demon that needs to be slain......

There are COUNTLESS mechs in BT lore that are built SPECIFICLY for specilization (AKA boating) and while im not going to say all the weapons in MW:O are perfect there isnt anything wrong with them if used in the proper situation (i with hold that opinion on Missles currently since there is apparently a huge bug with them now i havnt seen it personally but well see whats up and this post is NOT abbout missles currently)

People need to learn that in this game you can either be a jack of all trades
the mech sporting weapons to reach Long range, medium range and short range
like an LRM 20
2 Medium lasers
2 large lasers

or you can specialize you can be the long range guy
Multiple PPC's
Multipe ERPPCs (you pay for the close range ability with extra weight and heat)
LRM's (you have to give up weight and space for ammo and content with cover/ECM)
Gausses

or you can build yourself to be a close range brawler.
you get the point

now if you are in your Jack of all trades mech, and you try to brawl with a brawler YOUR PROBABLY GOING TO LOSE

If you are in your Jack of all trades mech, and you try to out snipe/range a long range mech
YOUR PROBABLY GOING TO LOSE.

on the other hand if you use your large lasers and your LRMs on that brawler while keeping your distance guess what HE's SCREWED
(assuming similar weights allow similar number of weapons if your in a medium Jack vs a Assault Brawler then he proably has weight and hardpoints to cover multiple ranges but it wont be his firepower that beats you shortrange it will be his armor outlasting your damage)

If you get in close to that long range guy and keep moving you can tear him a new one especially if he is LRM boating,
If he has a weapon that works both long and short range he will still have his heat issues also if your moving he wont be able to hit you 100% of the time. or if you have a teamate with a lock on him you can soften him up from behind cover with your LRM's

now as far as the dreaded splat cat is concerned
SHOOT OFF THE DANGED EARS!!! it doesnt take too much if you realy bother to try, but you know how many times in my A1 i will die from a engine death with both ears having only taken damage because i torso twisted them to take some damage?

also what do people want an A1 to do? gimp themselves?
they can equip
LRM's
SRM's
SSRM's
thats it. if they want to play long range they go LRM's problem there though is ecm can and more then likely will completely shut them down since they cant equip a tag (Narc is a joke and at 270 range why bother with LRM's?)
ECM also thros SSRM's out the window
so basicly the best build that doesnt require you to depend on back up is the splatcat......

sadly i think at this point people wont be happy until missles are removed completely along with the catapults.

If you try to brawl with a splatcat you will lose, however medium to long range engagements will keep it at a harmless state.

I agree that "boating" in and of itself is inherent to Battletech and 'Mechwarrior, as there are plenty of specialist designs meant to employ a single weapon system en masse. Even keeping examples to chassis available in MWO, we have the stock COM-2D (SRM); JR7-F (MLAS); HBK-4P (MLAS); CPLT-A1 and -C4 (LRM); JM6-S and -DD (AC); AWS-8Q and -9M (PPC); and AWS-8R and -8T (LRM).

However, that is not to say it is not a problem entirely. With plentiful options for customization, the ability to "min-max" certain variants, the scaleable engine ratings, the tight convergence possible on direct-fire weapons, and the heat mechanics, all create the possibility for extreme loadouts beyond the scope of canon variants.

OP you are correct; It seems like people in MWO prefer a "balanced build", which gives them the ability to operate at any range. This puts them at a disadvantage at any given range when engaging someone who specializes in that range. Gimping the effectiveness of a specialist is the answer. Exploiting a builds weakness is.

I haven't seen any builds far out of canon possibility. As for balance Take the A1 with SRMs. It suffers greatly using that weapon configuration. The balance comes into play when a mech that carries its entire arsenal in its arms, that are easy to remove.
