And while it's not uncommon for twinned AC/20's to kill people, the lesser ballistics (ac/2/5/10) really just aren't good.
The real problem with them IMHO is that Ammo Per Ton was not doubled when armor was doubled. So, an ammo loadout that was (in tabletop) reasonable just isn't here. You need to carry twice the ammo, which increases the effective weight and size of the weapon substantially, and increases the ammo-explosion danger.
It SHOULD be that:
Ballistics are larger, heavier, and ammo dependent, but generate little heat and are effective over a great range.
Lasers are smaller, lighter, and are not ammo dependent, but generate lots of heat and generally work at much shorter ranges.
However, currently the AC/2 generates ridiculous heat, the 5 has pitiful DPS, the 10 is and 10 damage just isn't the OMG OUCH it was on tabletop. Hell, it takes 2 AC/20's to really scare someone. A single 10? Meh. A Large Laser, for less than half the weight and a tiny fraction of the size does comparable damage with no ammo concerns.
The armor doubling ruined autocannons.
Edit: Long story short, due to armor doubling, the best way to fix autocannons without any danger of OPination is to double ammo per ton.
