Seeing something doesn't mean it's good. People run Machine Guns all the time.

And while it's not uncommon for twinned AC/20's to kill people, the lesser ballistics (ac/2/5/10) really just aren't good.

The real problem with them IMHO is that Ammo Per Ton was not doubled when armor was doubled. So, an ammo loadout that was (in tabletop) reasonable just isn't here. You need to carry twice the ammo, which increases the effective weight and size of the weapon substantially, and increases the ammo-explosion danger.

It SHOULD be that:
Ballistics are larger, heavier, and ammo dependent, but generate little heat and are effective over a great range.
Lasers are smaller, lighter, and are not ammo dependent, but generate lots of heat and generally work at much shorter ranges.

However, currently the AC/2 generates ridiculous heat, the 5 has pitiful DPS, the 10 is and 10 damage just isn't the OMG OUCH it was on tabletop. Hell, it takes 2 AC/20's to really scare someone. A single 10? Meh. A Large Laser, for less than half the weight and a tiny fraction of the size does comparable damage with no ammo concerns.

The armor doubling ruined autocannons.

Edit: Long story short, due to armor doubling, the best way to fix autocannons without any danger of OPination is to double ammo per ton.

If they decrease weight of AC type weapons then it shouldn't be too much, but I think it could use some tweaking. I've managed to do almost 900 damage on a good match with 2 uac5s and 2 ac 2s and an ER large. That's about as much as the currently unbalanced LRMs are getting.

Weight and crit slots are never going to be on the table for changes. They are the one thing that cannot be changed without invalidating every stock mech design.

Sure.
Now tell me how to make the bad guns good, while obeying these rules.

1) you must stick close to TT in spirit and execution.
2) you're not allowed to radically alter any crucical numbers (AC10 does 10 damage, AC2 does 2 damage...)
3) we can't brand items as total upgrades, and must instead insist that they're 'sidegrades.'

What if they upped their fire rate and lowered their heat per shot?

What do the "good" ballistic weapons offer?

1) Relatively low heat per damage delt
2) The biggest boon they offer is a large amount of damage focused instantly in a single location. 15 or 20 damage guaranteed to be delivered to one location.
3) One of them offers extreme range and extreme low heat, while the other maximizes point 2 and also offers very high DPS

The smaller weapons don't give back sufficient weight for their drop in DPS. They offer decent heat per damage, but they don't give you that focused punch or much DPS. This lack of focused punch is a major downside with how MWO works currently.

If we increased their rate of fire to rival the AC20 but cut their heat per shot to compensate, I don't think it would overpower them. You pay for that DPS/HPS gain and slightly less weight with the fact that you have to keep your target under fire and aim accurately at the same location for much longer. At least you'd be rewarded for exposing yourself to fire for longer with respectable DPS.

As it is now, you do more DPS and can more safely hide between long, slow shots with the bigger weapons.

If a single ac10 is not viable and its buffed, well then Im all smiles. A few missiles and med laz as backup and a single ac10 works wonders.. I actually cant wait to mount two ac10 on a mech,, Will be scary fun for me.
