Would be plausible if it hadn't been brought up 5 months ago as something that was going to happen, then let the buzz on it die until they were ready to just spring it on the player base that basically said hell no to it.

that would be a hilarious april fool's joke. make the game run in third person for a day.

I'd prefer jokes that don't take a lot worktime. Like a day when everone runs at double speed or so (seems far simpler to implement then 3rd person view). Game has enough problems, wasting time that could go into fixing stuff is terrible.
