I have posted about something like this earlier. But I wasn't very clear. I was thinking that to add depth to the game and fun (IMHO), that the pilot skill tree could be modified. Following a closer trend to Front mission.
Light, medium, heavy and assault chassis trees. this would be on top of specific chassises. like:
Piloting lvl 1 2%, lvl 2 4%, Lvl 3 6% could cost cb and mc
Gunnery same
speed same
Weapons specific perks. E.G.
Ac 20 Reload time, 2,4, and, 6% or Damage 2,4,6%. Convergence time. Now how this differs from what we use now is that you have perks for mechs, chassises, weight classes, individual weapons, weapons types, weapons of specific ranges (short/med/long)
Another example: you could get a perk for lrm 20's and stack that with an lrm perk. but you couldn't stack your lrm 20 perk on an lrm 15 but the standard lrm perk would.
sensors could also a perk tree (which they pretty much do now)
Also mechs could have mega/super/awesome/grand perks (what ever you want to call them) such as mechs takes less damage from lrms or whatever or it can not be locked as quick or locks are lost quicker on it (sneaky perk) Now I would suggest that only a limited (1) super perk could be used per mech and they would be expensive. Notice I said mech not mech chassis type. So if your raven 3l had sneaky it wouldn't apply to any other ravens. It would have to be bought again to apply to another mech.
Guess what I am getting at is that with this expanded skills tree that you( the player) could really tune in your mech to what you want to do and it would also cause alot of diversity (we hope) in mechs build and play style. It may seem overly complex, but if it were to be implememnted properly it would really bring out the Role playing part of the game as well as differences in mechs that are on the surface the same. (OOH sneaky atlas fights a hard armor stalker).
Atlas Surpise! (alpha to stalker)
Stalker Ouch! where did that come from? oh it's you. good thing I had hard armor on this mech or that would have cored me.
Atlas: Run! run away!
8)
Just a suggestion open to refinement. Just thought it would add a lvl of depth to the game.

Had some ideas after I finished the post for super perks. All are mech specific
Hot head: the hotter the mech runs the faster it dispates heat. Good for laser boats
Really ultra: Ultras have less of a chance of jamming
AMS Champion: Ams shoots down more missiles
Fall to pieces: The more damage you take the stronger your armor gets
Mech rage: For every mech you kill you get a bonus to your mech stats. (per game)
faster then light: Lasers do thier damage in shorter bursts.
That is just a couple and they would probably need tweaking.
