I have a weird problem. Whenever a patch is released i have to uninstall the game and re-install the whole thing.
if i try to just patch the game it downloads the patch and applies the patch but seems to freeze where it says it is applying the patch.
I am running a windows 7 pro x64 system and normally i seem to be able to run the game just fine except for patching it.

I am glad i am not the only one having this issue. Kind of a buzz kill to come home on a day off expect to play a bit but instead spend a couple hours re-downloading 1+ gigs of a patch.

Well, I definitely have the same problem. Tried on 3 different internet connections, disabled all firewalls, antivirus, windows defender and stuff but nothing seems to work. I don't get it that a company that is depending on the money from players, doesn't care about getting such error fixed..

I might have a solution because I experienced a similar problem.

Yesterday I decided to reinstall MWO because of problems with the ground textures in some maps (that problem started yesterday and I didn't changed anything on my systems (including updates of drivers or windows itself)).
After downloading the whole 1.7 GB the patcher tried to apply the patch but failed and just closed. Hadn't any problems before that with appling patches. The only difference this time was that I installed MWO not in the default directory. I looked into the MWO files and found under ...\MechWarrior Online\Bin32 the file frontend_patcher_log.txt. I opened it and saw that it found the already downloaded files but failed to apply it because of an error in the file location:

20.04.2013 13:29:21 - main - Config file: S:\Games\MechWarrior Online\Bin32\PatchBot.cfg

Watch for the last line. There you can see in the second location string a double backslash. If you found something similar do the following:

WARNING: Do the following instructions on your own. I am not responsible if you screw up your registry. If you are unsure what you are doing: get professional help.

Open the registry editor (if you don't know how then you need professional help). Either search DATA for the wrong string that you found like I descripted above (use as search term 'MWOUpdate') or go directly to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Piranha Games\Mechwarrior Online\Production. There you will find the key TEMPFOLDER with the wrong entry.
If you have found it, correct it (in my case I just removed one of the doubled \ ) and close the editor (the wrong data should only be once in the registry). Restart the patching process. That worked for me.

PGI: Correct your patcher, shouldn't be that hard to figure out what you have done wrong here.

Have fun, Mechkilla

EDIT : added a search term to better find the registry key (thx for that hint to One of Little Harmony)

Wow, I completely skimmed over the double backslash. Nice catch.

That actually worked perfect. I saw the double slash in there but had no clue how to fix it.

As a NEW PLAYER, I am very aggitated having to spend 45mins to figure this out just to install the game. I've come across some pesky bugs in other free-to-plays but damn, I haven't even started playing yet. Not everyone has the sense to check the forums for a fix. I feel as if I should be reimbursed for time wasted. I'll be treading carefully before I drop a dime into this one.

Thank you very much for the fix Mechkilla.

I was just able to reproduce this error. When I installe dthe game, I manually typed the install path and put a trailing \ at the end. After reading this post I uninstalled it and redid the same thying without putitng the trailing \ and it worked.

Clearly this is a bug with the installer. It should clean/trim any trailing \ in the install path if it's causing issues.

A bug report should be opened for this guys. The patcher/installer needs to be fixed.
