I only play lights and mediums. I probably won't get into assaults until the Charger appears.

Assaults are so slow. They lumber along with massive amounts of firepower but lack the mobility needed to adapt to a situation. At best they can go in reverse and in desperation they can back up against a wall--but that's just it, they're backed up to a wall with nowhere to go.
As I see it, Assaults can't dictate the flow of battle beyond their own front line. If they have the initiative they must keep that going and not stop--and should the tide turn even slightly, they lack the recovery needed to regain it.
Thus, I rarely pilot an assault. I just have more fun in the smaller mechs. Except a 3L. Only heathens pilot 3Ls.

You'll learn a lot by piloting an assault. I started on medium second line brawlers and heavy strikers, but progressed through the assaults quite naturally. They're very powerful and easy to use if you position well and enjoy shooting everything. My STK-3F is in the top tier of mechs I hop into for fun. I wouldn't say you're an aberration, but you'll be hurting yourself in the long run by not learning the ins/outs of all mechs.

I started out piloting the Jenner. Favorite Light mech: Founder's Jenner, max speed, 5 JJs, 3 MPL.
I hate the 3L. Only use it when my unit calls for it.
Went to assaults after light, mastered atlas. I'm ok with them. Not great...not terrible. They require too much patience.
Lately, mastered HBKs, coming with builds that use standard engines. I pair myself with an assault, then try and use my mobility to concentrate fire.

I usually go with Mediums or Heavies personally. Lights tend to bee too nimble for my liking and Assaults are too slow.

I love playing just about any weight class, but I do exponentially better in a heavy or assault. There's just something about dropping a fast engine in a heavy or assault chassis that suits my playstyle.

I never play assaults either.... mainly I play heavies and lights (on my other account), with the odd medium for good measure. Highlander may change that, I think that might finally be the right assault for me. We shall see.

The right way to balance mediums / lights might be the most simplest.... Make them smaller. Not to unrealistic proportions but surely they could be 10-15% smaller without being exclusive to midget pilots.
