I press H start of match, every match. I play on a 21 inch laptop though and have tried normal vision, I just can't see things as far in normal as in thermal. Maybe a bigger monitor would fix that. For me the pros are enormous over the cons.

That said I always wish I could just stay in normal vision for the reason you describe, the visuals in the game are great.

I'm always surprised by how many people claim thermal isn't better. It makes me wonder if lower graphical settings worsen thermal's performance.

Even the snowy maps are pretty awesome in just regular visuals. You can see the blowing snow cresting the drifts, see it get kicked up by mechs footprints. It clears up in patches, showing enemies through the fog in brief flashes.

It's harder. I'm sure I'm not doing as well as I did with thermal but I'm enjoying the game more.

People are just going to crank their gamma on Night maps. Lame.

So I played a couple of rounds in RCN with no visual modes engaged. DAMN it's pretty, and the dark really adds atmosphere. Best part was the walk up from the ship/port base towards Upper City. Really spooky abandoned city feel as you're walking between all the buildings in the half-light.

In terms of gameplay I think the biggest issue I had wasn't tracking targets but more running into "short" stuff like buildings/etc. that are below mech waist-level while in pursuit. Luckily there was no ECM, so all mech's had the red/blue triangle hovering over them as they ran. A match with a lot of ECM would be interesting.

Also, "running dark" showed me (kind of scary) how well I seem to have memorized the map! I was running into cover by instinct!

I'm gonna keep running in the dark a bit, see if I can improve my match scores/results.

Thanks for the suggestion MischiefSC!

try turning Post Processing to Low, it kinda clears away a bit of that at the cost of only a bit of graphics sweetness

So next week some changes to vision modes are coming in. They'll be useful but only in their given context - they won't be inherently superior to regular vision on every map.

So over the next week I'm going to challenge people to see how many games they can play without Thermal. NV is okay for dark maps but otherwise.... do you have the situational awareness and perception to play without relying on colored blobs? Even on maps with visual obstructions like fog, snow and the like?

Cold turkey is a tough way to quit anything. I challenge YOU to see how long you can go without Thermal. Most of 1 game? How about only 1 game in 3, regardless of map?

How hardcore are you? Who's got the brass to just move on from 'shoot the colored blob' and into 'WYSIWYG'?

Anyone that doesn't suck is probably using some overlay or .INI tweaks to disable all those obstructions anyways.

I refuse to "cheat," and thus suck at this game, apparently. Same as so many other FPS games.

No. You must use it as your EXCLUSIVE vision mode. So I win.

I suspect it is the opposite.

You mean adjusted a slider in "settings"? Shame on them. B)

We finally get new vision modes and you don't want us to try them? B)

No, we've been discussing several ways to "improve" our 8v8 game in my unit, and "more than one person" mentioned some third party programs he knows that are used to "make things clearer" and such by "the pro's."

I won't post further details due to TOS regarding hacks and the like. I don't think these particular tricks are really hacks, but they are a bit unfair. I like to play with all the eye candy on, and that is actually detrimental to being good at the game, which I find sad.

So over a hundred games with no thermal or night vision. No change to visuals other than the tweaks that were approved a bit ago - post processing stuff.

My KDR and win/loss have both gone UP - not just that but RCN and Frozen City which used to be my worst maps have become better for me.

Having to focus more, pay more attention, be more attentive and cautious as well as a clear view of exactly what location I'm hitting has helped a lot.

I use my lasers on RCN to illuminate targets now to get a better feel for positioning before I fire my ACs and the like. The visuals are just stunning; I saw some poor ******* get tagged by a 3x LB10X Phract with chain fire set up today. It was like watching fireworks.

Anyone else actually unmap the keys until April 2nd?

I only use thermal on River city night as is, I can't stand shoot at blue blob vision otherwise.

Hell, I would use only NV on River city night if it wasn't so glaringly bright that it made 1970s era tech look space age.
