Usual highlanders have rt with energy, ra with ballistics while the left side is used for missiles.. here yes, you can cripple the hero mech by side torsoing the left side, that's a weakness for sure, but you also get 3 energy on an arm, which isn't a joke especially for a jump capable thing..

Someone finally had an epiphany, and I wholeheartedly support this slight change in business model.
I do have to question the name "Heavy Metal" after reading this, however:

HGN-734 - The 734 Highlander emphasizes its role as an urban combat 'Mech, produced by the Lyran Alliance in the wake of the civil war. The Gauss Rifle has been replaced with a massive LB-X Autocannon/20, the medium lasers have been upgraded to ER Medium Lasers, the SRM-6 was upgraded to a streak version with another Streak SRM-6 launcher added, as well as an ER Large Laser. Upgrading the standard fusion engine to a new Light Engine and removing the LRM-20 launcher allowed these changes. Which is 3058
But to be honest when i get a Highlander i will be selling the Gauss Rifle and slapping a Ac20 in its place, since i don't want my Energy Torso slots going up as well due to a GR explosion. I can't wait man can't wait to work on some Crazy weapon configs .

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't think the Highlander will be able to mount an AC/20 in its ballistic arm. According to the TRO files in Solaris Skunk Werks, each of the Highlander's configs have a lower arm actuator in the ballistic arm, so it can mount anything that has less crits than an AC/20 (think of the ballistic arm on a Cataphract).
The only reason the Lyran Highlander can mount an LBX-AC/20 in its gun arm with the lower arm actuator is because it takes advantage of the Battletech construction rules for being able to split weapon criticles with weapons that take up 8 slots or more between the arm and the side torso it's connected to. Such weapons use the most restricted firing arc of the two locations (in the LBX Highlander's case, the side torso).
If PGI implemented that rule, that would make it possible to mount AC/20s on a lot more 'mechs.

I guess I missed that variant. I don't see it on Sarna.net, but it is present in MegaMek. I wonder if it's canon. If it isn't, I don't mind having one that can mount an AC/20 in the arm

Nope.
It is going to be a more mobile Atlas. Mobility means less firepower. Less firepower means Atlas is still king.
Im going to love it though. Crank up that engine and throw on the JJ's!
