I don't really have anything to add, just wanted say this was an informative discussion. My Flame gets the best of both worlds: 4xMlaser + AC20.

Medium lasers are fine.
I'm by no means the best with medium lasers, however:

Roughly 2.8-3.0 points of damage each time I fire a medium laser. My Jenner carries a bank of 4 in one build and a bank of 6 in another. That's 12-18 points of damage, give or take, 95% of the time I hit the fire button.
On average, per match, I'm dealing 132 points of damage with my medium lasers. Keep in mind I also run with a Catapult C4 that has 2 medium lasers on it - so my designs that actually revolve around the medium laser run a much higher damage average.

My JR7-D has 4 medium lasers and 2 SRM4s
My JR7-F has 6 medium lasers. Currently, the Delta has only a few points more average damage per match than the Foxtrot - though the Foxtrot has been played so little compared to the Delta, that it's difficult to really compare statistics.
The point is that I'm regularly at the top of both damage and kill/assist rankings in spite of being surrounded by much heavier mechs sporting dakka-dakka.
Arguably, my damage should go -down- as I get better with these weapons - though that's a target versus aggressor 'skill check.'
Sure - I have to be very aware of my heat buildup, but that's just fine. On occasion, I get a little excited and mash the attack button too soon, overheat, and earn my darwin award.
Obviously, I'm not having much trouble ripping things up with lasers.
Plus... anything can mount medium lasers. It's the 'i-don't-know-what-to-put-here-so-i'll-do-this' weapon of the Inner Sphere. Medium lasers are to the inner sphere what LRMs are to the clans. "Meh... got five tons left on my desgin... I'll just put in the ability to launch a salvo of 20 missiles."
It takes a little more pampering to make an AC20 at home in a design. It should confer some advantages over a battery of abundance... like being able to push out a lot of damage over a spike in the fighting despite heat (exactly the point of ballistics).
Edit.... yeah... in my editor, it showed a table... in my post... it does not... we'll see if this fixes it.

Very interesting topic, I think that Some lasers are inefficient heat wise, while others are not. or at least not to inefficient.
that said I feel like the only lasers that aren't used much are the erlarge, and i think that has as much to do with heat, as it does with tonnage.

Because he was hoping for everyone to agree with his opinion so that PGI would change this to his ideal, never minding the fact that TT is not balanced at all, and the slew of reasons provided here as to why such changes would not be ideal
