Precisely because it is the least-good variant, it requires investment to upgrade its parts to make the grind as tolerable as possible and make it as effective as possible.

Convert XP to GXP on Double XP weekend sales then dump it on to the crappy mechs and sell them.
14,250 for one mech's basic skills.

I've often surprised myself by hating the variant I thought I'd love and loving the redheaded stepchild variant I just picked up to basic out. The Treb 5J is a perfect example. I thought I'd like all the other trebs, but the 5J is the only one still holding a place in my garage.

I voted 'other'.

For variants I *know* for a fact I'm not going to want to keep, I don't want to invest a lot of cash into them. However, stock builds, and even builds that are just close to stock, are frequently almost unusable. I'm very unlikely to leave anything remotely resembling the stock weapon loadout on it, I'll instead strip it and load it out with something more sane. However, I can do this because it costs me very little money given the extensive stock of spare weapons I have. Where I skimp is that I won't spend money on the upgrades. So, it's not just 'minor tweaks to stock', but it's not 'really investing cbills into it' either. And yes, lacking double heat sinks does make the grind a bit painful, but I can try to design the builds around that limitation, and I only have to get through ~14,000 XP before I can sell them.

I pick a chassis from every weight class and grab all the variants available to master and use. Havn't sold a mech yet!

12 mechs so far, another 4 incoming mid april.

The Commando was easy - all three were a delight to take to Master and 25k XP beyond.
The Centurion as well - Mastered + 100k XP on each no sweat.
The Spider 5D just breezed through Basic, but then...

...then I bought a Spider 5K.

That one's turning out to be a real slog, probably because I'm using 4xMG on it (and an ERPPC).

It may even make me give up on the Spider chassis entirely and just wait for the Flea. I might even sell the darned things, even though I'm opposed to selling 'mechs (since it's such a waste of CB).

Turn them into killing machines. Then celebrate whenever I win and reconstruct whenever I lose. Rinse and repeat.

I still build it like the others. I only have a couple engines so I just strip whatever mech I'm not using and build up the one I am.

I never sell any mechs, and try to maximize all of them to my play style.

Make a Spider-Urbie out of your 5K. AC-10 to the face is always a surprise coming from a Spider. Of course, you have to suffer through lots of dying for it... B)

Which isn't much difference from the 4xMG+ERPPC 5K anyway - they lots of dying part I mean...

Drop money in it, configure it, master it, sell it. Have a few mechbays I have for rotating mech variants.

Can be a long process.

Like said above, I sometimes find that the variant of the series I thought I'd love I end up hating and loving the one that I LOATHED driving at the start.

I'll invest in all the mechs I need to make them playable. I'll grind a mech until I have the XP to master it (even though I can't unlock it until the 3rd comes around). By the time you grind out the XP for elite unlocks, you've more than paid for that mech, and by the time you grind the XP for master, you've bought the next chassis of the 3.

I have spent too much Cbills and time trying to get some builds to work for me. After after that investment I can't bring myself to sell them, even if I never plan on playing them again.
