After playing in the TF2 halloween event and playing Guild Wars during several events, I thought of something that MWO could use to their advantage to kinda bring in new players or rebuild interest as time goes by after release. Obviously this idea was events, but not in the holiday sense (those will do too though), but use the BT timeline to have events go on in the servers. Such as the dreaded clan invasion (which everyone thinks breaks the game, but has to happen sometime). Obviously they could advertise it on the main website with a giant countdown clock until the first wave officially launched according to the BT timeline (but not actually add clans to the game) for a persistent world to work, the clans actually have to gain a foothold first anyway (like after the 3rd or 4th waves and obviously before the Truce of Tukayyid). What could be done is similar to what TF2 did with the Horseman, have random clan mechs appear (varying from maybe just one mech to a full star) in servers on occasion that attack random players and force players to try to join together and fight him or just try to ride the chaos and hope either one survives.
I think events like these would greatly help with keeping players involved in the persistent world, as well as make it unique due to the fact these events are not just holiday events but based on the BT timeline.
Also, just imagine if the game made it to the Jihad, now that would create some interesting scenarios to unfold.

I see what you are saying but you need to keep in mind:
1. The Clans gained a foothold early on..... as in the 1st wave. Most IS people were terrified at the sight of the new designs, confused by the batchalls being issued & overwhelmed & overrun by the efficiency of the Clan forces. (Clan Wolf Sourcebook Pg.31)
2. The invasion was not a P.E. class where a lazy teacher throws a ball & says, "Here, go play." This was a coordinated invasion with the ilKhan at the head, & each Clan Khans overseeing the logistics of the campaign on the whole. There are no random mechs walking into a territory. "Dum dee dum dee dum, oh no I seem to have casually strolled into a unit of IS mechs." Each Clan was assigned a specific invasion corridor & each sub commander would work out a strategy for taking out their individual "slice of the pie". If the devs want to keep this canon (as they stated they have) there is not going to be any stumbling about.
I get what you are driving at, you may just want to tweak it a bit.

That would be hilarious! Can you imagine looking across the battlefield to see the entire opposing force decked out in Santa hats with wreaths and tinsel? I would have to take a screenshot or two before I opened fire.

Some colorful lights, Christmas stickers, and some presents in cockpits should be enough to celebrate Christmas and dont kill the seriousness of the game. Mechwarriors are people after all.

Despite them gaining a good foothold in the 1st wave, honestly simulating the rest of the invasion would suck because it would mean all the IS "mercs" would face clan "mercs" on very uneven terms, so by foothold I should've also added right before the truce when territories were pretty much solidified (and the IS figured out how to beat the clans).
As for the invasion being like PE, never said it should be, but in the event they dont add clan tech until after the invasion starts (for reasons stated above), to help build hype about an impending release of clan tech they could do this. It keeps up interest kind of like how Guild Wars has been building hype for Guild Wars 2 with a bunch of storyline and kind concept stuff being added to tie the two together. It's not the full fledged product, but they tease you with it a lot.
I guess to make it simpler, the random clan mechs isnt to simulate the clans invading realistically, but a gimmick to build hype and keep people interested for clan tech if they actually decide to go that route. Plus in a persistent world you dont just all the sudden say oh these guys are invading, they are small, but anyone who joins them gets the best tech ever. You introduce them through other means and when they are balanced you add them to the game (maybe not the official method, but it would work a hell of a lot better).
