Asked my friend and sure enough there was that pesky little option clicked on. Now I know why something about my aim and the reticle has been off from when I first gave the game a try months ago.

Now that I'm officially hooked as of last Saturday I still have lots to learn but I think I'd prefer to hold down Shift to disengage lock and by default not run around with floppy arms.

I wish I had known about shift / arm lock last few nights there were so many annoying lights who I could have cored or people above me on a hill I could have AC'ed.

I think a toggle would just throw me off and in the middle of a battle I'd lose track of it, holding down shift makes it deliberate. Maybe atleast make it a further option for those who want it as a toggle.


Opposite for me, but basically the same thing. I prefer to shift to lock my arms. Because to have total control you also have to press left CTRL to take control of the arms with ease.

There was a feedback / comments thread before it was implemented.

There was overwhelming support for:

Armlock to be toggle not press and hold
Armlock not to be default
Throttle decay not to be default
Something to let new players know about the new functionality, and that shift could be used to unlock the arms

Unfortunately they did not implement any of these things, so I am not sure why they bothered to ask for feedback.

At the very least there should be an option where you can choose yourself whether you want arm lock to be toggle or press and hold.

To answer your question I actually like arm lock in some situations, so a thumbs up there.

Throttle decay is inexplicable to me, but there you go.

It's a disadvantage, period.

It gains you no advantage over someone with unlocked arms, but they have an advantage over you.

Arms have greater movement than the torso in all cases, so the unlocked mech can bring some weapons to bear in circumstances where the locked mech cannot bring any.

The unlocked mech will have both reticules linked together on target in exactly the same amount of time as the locked mech, but he has the option of either holding his fire until his torso catches up with his arms, or firing his arm mounted weapons immediately, and then the torso weapons when they catch up.

Arm lock helps less skilled players(actually, more accurately arm lock helps less patient players), but it is an absolute, objective handicap.

I thouroughly despise the new controls, thankfully they can be disabled,
Then again I understood the two crosshairs in my very first game, it was pretty self explanatory what with a weapons list that also contains a key with identical symbols to those in the centre of your screen.
The new controls just make maintaining anything other than full throttle a *****, and limit your aiming extremeties, I personally found both options to be a total hindrance and completely unhelpful.
Mind you theres always the lowest common denominator which is what these additions seem to be aimed at, sigh

One potential way I can see to implement separate torso and arm aiming via independent control would be to add support for trackIR, and control the torso movement with your head movement, freeing your mouse to control the finer movements of the arms for closer engagements and close target tracking. It would take some serious getting used to, but I can imagine some significant advantages, to the point where people might not like it.
