New to the folds here but have been addicted to Battletech since a wee lad and I am discovering losts of new things here.

Alot of my discoveries are by trial and error (I know now to hide behind the BUFFs when in my Jenner) and alot by reading in here and thanks for that.

Question i have is this, and I apologize if there is already a thread on this, but is this eventually progressing into a RPG game with the factions and Clans coming into play?

That's the rumor... nothing concrete at this time.

It won't be a true RPG or close to that, however the Community Warfare will have varying degree of elements that will mimic Merc/House contracts for service, attacking different worlds, negotiating contracts for defense, salvage and other things. Also there has been some discussion of possible employing your own astechs to repair your Battlemechs.

I don't think this game is going for MMO or RPG as much as being a vehicle shooter.

what we see right now is what we get. We will have more maps maybe one or 2 more game modes (way down the road, like years) more mech, but this nutshell is what we have. The only thing CW is is going to be a modified "stats page" nothing different then we have now. We will have billions of zillions of awesome cammos and colors thought.

Well you have to give the DEV's more time. The game is still progressing, slowly, but it is still progressing and they have said that they want to include more worlds, more elements and make it seem more like a RPG to some extent. Or at least have a feel that there's more to the game that just a vehicle shooter. But it's going to take a lot more time before we'll see the full power of this fully operational Mechwarrior: Online.

I hear we'll get an optional mining attachment and melee weapon crafting in the future.

Not trying to be a downer, but I think people are expecting a lot considering the devs don't call it an MMO or an RPG... they call it a first person tactical shooter.
  • 8v8 or even 12v12 is not massive (as in MMO) and never will be.
  • The devs have not mentioned any persistent worlds where we interact with each other (beyond 8v8 or 12v12 in a static, non-persistent map).
  • They said no player based economy.
  • Community warfare sounds like it may have a persistent planetary star system map, if that makes it an MMO then our standards have dropped...
  • No PvE planned.
  • We are not leveling up pilots we are unlocking skills on a per mech basis so I don't see how that is an RPG element.
I fear players expecting this to turn into a MMORPG are going to be disappointed.

If community warfare provides a persistant state world, then this game would technically be a MMOFPS.

It's already an RPG. I'm currently playing the role of a person who likes robots and shooting robots.

Well, we do things to make our numbers go up. Mech XP, General XP, Cbills. Then we do things with those numbers, so we can make more numbers go up. Also we buy new things to make numbers go up in.

Really, it depends upon what your definition of "RPG" (role-playing game) is. I would say that MWO has some minor RPG elements, but I wouldn't personally call it a RPG at this time. More of a multiplayer non-hardcore vehicle sim (by hardcore I mean like, DHS games, Falcon series, etc) with minor RPG elements. I may change my mind when CW goes in, depending on how in-depth that is.

Is Madden an rpg because it tracks stats and has teams?

THEY AREN'T ROBOTS. THEY ARE BATTLEMECHS. AND WE ARE MECHWARRIORS.

and people wonder why I try to save my mech, waiting for extraction, when I'm down 7 to 1.

A true MechWarrior knows when to save the metal, if they can.

50 bucks says the store is fully implemented long before anything remotely resembling the original vision for "community warfare".

Smoke and mirrors, corporate marketing.

The game needs revenue to operate. Staying in business is their number one priority.
