K so i've never owned a decent joystick, and played older MW games using kb/mouse, what's the consensus on which is better?

Also, if we go stick, what's a good (and relatively inexpensive) joystick to get?

back in the day i always used the saitek single joysticks mainly because of them being highly adjustable for a variety of hand sizes and lefties.

but since i havent bought one since mw4:mercs, i really have no clue as to whats out there for a large-handed lefty nowadays.

so id be curious also to hear any suggestions.

Joysticks still exist? Word of the day, revelation.

I'm likely to go keyboard and mouse until I have proof the game is insanely more fluid and easier to pilot on a specific non-expensive joystick.

I'd say that a Joystick ( preferably a H.O.T.A.S. System ) will give you the better immersion of beeing in a Mech than using a Mouse/Keyboard Combo.

I just got myself a Saitek X-65F Combat Control System which is just awesome for games like the Mechwarrior franchise ( Just tested it on some older games ).

I'd say it's a personal preference and to some extend a money thing which way you go.

Key and mouse were popular in MW3, but not so much in MW4 due to all of the dynamics involved in controlling the Mech. Key and mouse are good for those old die-hard crusty guys, but the joystick is going to be superior in this game. At the end of the day it really just depends on your personal preference. Here's an inexpensive joystick option that should work for starters if you want to try it.

I've seen that logitech around several times, a buddy even gave me one before he moved (found out it was because it didn't work, but still) so I'm familiar with the controls on it at least. DO the stick users usually put it in their lap or up on the desk, because my desk is quite abit higher then my chair, lol.

People mount joysticks everywhere. I have read multiple posts by users that make modifications from extending the handles to mounting them on a chair, to building a desk and other things. It's all up to you. The main thing is to use whatever you are the most comfortable with that best fits your style of play.

As for the Logitech, it is known to have some calibration issues after about 6 months, but it is cheap. A friend of mine has used them for years and is somewhat of an expert on that model. He tells me not to use the software included in the box, just to let Windows load its own drivers. He also said a good cleaning with some contact cleaner to de-gunk the contacts will solve the calibration issues most every time. So, for the money, I think it's a pretty good option.

I prefer Joystick/throttle setup. The hats and throttle usually help me a lot more with situational awareness and mobility than fumbling for keys. And I usually use a set up that can enable me the most comfort below desk level

Try Thrustmaster...I think they make a lefty joystick or at least one that can be converted to left.

Well, I do hope that Joystick support is added. It's like playing FSX with a keyboard- not too fun. A pretty good inexpensive stick ( and the one I use) is the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. If they don't add stick support, I'll be disappointed.

When you start getting into so many control variables, and the physics of large versus small mech control responses, you need more control options. Keyboard and mouse just don't cut it when you have a complex simulation, and your game play will suffer with its limitations. I like the Saitek X52 for MW4. We'll have to see what the best setup will be for MWO which adds the element of an independent arm recticle control.

Two joysticks! X52 Pro for aiming, and a spare for throttle control and turning.
