Simple, write a one liner and the game will place it on one of the predetermined places on the mech.

For the purpose of making this thread more than a one liner here are some convenient placings grouped by mech body parts.

Torso:
  • center vertical, center horizontal
  • on the back, same placement
Side torso:
  • upper section
  • lower lower section
Arms:
  • outside wrist
  • inside wrist
I'm pretty sure this'll be abused for messages filled with profanity so here's a few rules that will have to apply.
  • only letters, numbers and dots can be used
  • no more than 5 words (some haikus are longer)
  • everything is uppercase - prevents highlighting letters that contain profanity
  • a player nickname, unless it's the player that owns the mech, cannot be used (algorithm can also take care of that)
Also, a simple algorithm, that a college freshman can write, that takes the input and puts it into a buffer, erases all dots and white space and then checks for profanity in the sequence of letter symbols in that buffer.
If no profanity is detected, the input sequence is placed as a decal.

The only problem that remains is l33t talk where one can just write ***, **** etc. and get away with it. (YES, l33t talk is OLD but some smart4sses still may use it thinking they invented the wheel)That'll require tickets.
Also a log of decals on fielded mechs would have to be kept for each player in order to prevent perpetrators from dodging being fined just by erasing the decal and pretending it never happened.
