I've seen a few threads on the Assault game mode. I don't have a problem with it personally, and I don't think all players have a problem with capping mechanics. The one gripe I see with this game mode is that there's sometimes no fighting. Not specifically the capping mechanics, but the fact that both teams don't find each other, and manage to slip by to the enemy base. When this happens, it's always met with "yawn," "boring," and "action packed!"

Ok, I have an idea (brace yourselves.)

Instead of two bases, there's just one base, right in the middle of the spawn points. This way, you have both teams fighting over the objective, but it still retains the capping mechanic. Perhaps you could even make the cap time a little longer to prevent a light rush.

Not sure how it would go in testing, but on paper it does seem a little better than each team sticking together and going at it straight team death match style, and just hoping that the enemy didn't slip by them to cap the base.

I think they tried this once. Drop balance favored assault mechs more then the lighter chassis because once you got to the point, there was the mother of all brawls at the point. Which was cool, but the winner of the brawl pretty much won the game because the loosing team usually had no way to contesting the point.

The current 2 point system at least forces you to think about defense to a limited degree while the brawl is in full swing, and gives lights something to do while the big boys slug it out.
