I have read the article that has been getting attention recently and it made me think about how I play the game and what I want from it.
First off this game takes up more time then I would like. At times it feels like a grind, but I haven't quit yet, I love mechwarrior game play and I think it is a much more interesting experience than your average game, it is special to me. But the experience I want is to simply pick-up the game and play with friends a few nights out of the week and have fun in the mechwarrior universe.
I am part of a small merc. corp that I mostly help organize affairs and chat for. The rumors of custom decals and merc. owned area was exciting to us. We joked that we could have a planet to call our own. We do not practice or have regular meetings, we are a loose confederacy of players who enjoy jokes and not taking anything too seriously. We made decisions like not requiring a paint job that used MC based paints specifically to lower the bar of entry to our corp because we felt it was important to include not only the die hard but the new and casual players.
As I read the community warfare part of the article it seemed to suggest that my Corp. would have to pay to be recognized and to function as mercenaries in-game. I am not opposed to paying a one time start up fee for my group of friends to have a Merc. corp, but I will not ask them to pay to be part of my group. It feels wrong to me. it does not promote the induction of new players and instead seems to present a wall between the hardcore and casual players based on how much they are willing to invest in MWO.
It looks like my merc. corp. will be one that exist only in chat and the pride of its members, not in game, because we will be either in factions or lone wolves.
